Anti-Gender Campaigns in Europe : Mobilizing against Equality  /

samenvatting: After decades of steady progress in terms of gender and sexual rights, several parts of Europe are facing new waves of resistance to a so-called 'gender ideology' or 'gender theory'. Opposition to progressive gender equality is manifested in challenges to marriage equality, abortion, reproductive technologies, gender mainstreaming, sex education, sexual liberalism, transgender rights, antidiscrimination policies and even to the notion of gender itself. This book examines how an academic concept of gender, when translated by religious organizations such as the Roman Catholic Church, can become a mobilizing tool for, and the target of, social movements. How can we explain religious discourses about sex difference turning intro massive street demonstrations? How do forms of organization and protest travel across borders? Who are the actors behind these movements? This collection is a transnational and comparative attempt to better understand anti-gender mobilizations in Europe. It focuses on national manifestations in eleven European countries, including Russia, from massive street protests to forms of resistance such as email bombarding and street vigils. It examines the intersection of religious politics with rising populism and nationalistic anxieties in contemporary Europe.

Queer Logics : From Homonationalism to Homopopulism  / James Keith Lotter.

samenvatting: In 2016 and 2017 Europe and North America witnessed the coming out of a rumoured backlash against the liberal democratic internationalist post-WWII world order. This led to and intensified a resurgence of populist-nationalist politics that manifested through an array of consecutive presidential and national elections that took place in some of the world's most prominent liberal democracies, namely the USA, Holland, France and Germany. As such, each instance represents a unique set of circumstances and contexts that influenced their internal political climates; however, a shared hegemonic positioning within the global order, along with a history of multilateral relationships, makes the consequences of these (2016/2017) populist-nationalist electoral results far-reaching and inherently global. The populist-nationalist rhetoric of the 21st century remains closely aligned with notions of exclusionary and respectability politics, and the majority of marginalised communities remain resistant to this. However, shifting geopolitical dynamics have demonstrated new global political outcomes. With a specific focus on LGBTQ politics, this study notes that the rise of populist-nationalism in historically mature liberal democracies in Europe and North America poses a significant threat to the broader LGBTQ community across the globe. Rights advancement remains low (if present at all) on the domestic and foreign agendas of (right-wing) political entities. This study is particularly interested in the increasing public support for populist-nationalist groups coming from segments of the LGBTQ community itself. As such, it argues that in contrast to previous decades, the 21st century is presenting a new type of LGBTQ politics. Through employing the lenses of Queer IR, Cynthia Weber's (2016a) 'queer logics of statecraft' and Jasbir Puar's (2007b) Homonationalism, this study seeks to expose what it calls 'queer collusions' by understanding what seems to be an unconventional and counterintuitive political phenomenon. Through bringing these theories and concepts into conversation, this study conceptualises what it calls a 'political and historical shift in European and North American LGBTQ politics,' that is, from Homonationalism (post-9/11) to Homopopulism (post-Orlando/ISIS). The theorisation of Homopopulism thus assists in understanding the dynamics associated with this shift, particularly the inclusion of the politics of fear against the backdrop of a declining (neo)liberal world order. Homopopulism therefore reveals the queer logics of populism, the fearful queer sovereign subjects that authorise it, and the fear-based sovereign leaders who deploy it.

'Sexually modern nativist voters' : Do they exist and do they vote for the populist radical right  / Niels Spierings, Marcel Lubbers, Andrej Zaslove.

Gender and Education (2017), p. 1-22
bron: Gender and Education (2017), p. 1-22
samenvatting: Populist radical right (PRR) parties have attracted anti-migration voters by claiming to serve the interests of nationally defined in-groups. Recently, several European PRR parties have shifted focus from protecting traditional values to protecting so-called modern Western values, including lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender rights. Here, we study whether PRR parties managed to attract voters who hold these modern values. In contrast with previous research, we do not position these voters with 'modern values' as necessary opponents of nativist voters. European Social Survey data linked to 29 elections demonstrate that the likelihood to vote for PRR parties is somewhat lower among lesbian and gay rights people, but not for those who have strong anti-migration attitudes. However, this effect differs across countries and in some cases, the 'sexually modern nativists' have the highest PRR voting likelihoods. This is not directly related to the parties' position on modern family values, but to the party system and alternative right-wing parties present.

Populist contestations: Cultural change and the competing languages of sexual and gender identity  / Rob Cover.

Sexualities, 25 (2022) 5-6 (sep), p. 660-675
bron: Sexualities jaargang: 25 (2022) 5-6 (sep), p. 660-675
samenvatting: There has been a vast proliferation of categories, descriptors and labels used to describe gender and sexual identity over the past few years, with terms now numbering in the hundreds. Many terms, such as heteroflexible, asexual, demigirl and sapiosexual actively contest masculine/feminine and hetero/homo binary arrangements of identity, and LGBTQ minority rights discourses and arguably represent an epochal shift in gender/sexual knowledge frameworks. The cultural conditions that make such change possible have yet to be explored. This paper draws on theoretical approaches to populism to analyse the role of popular culture, digital communication and contestation of institutional and expert knowledges in driving the emergence of new gender and sexual terminology.

What shapes voter expectations of Muslim politicians' views on homosexuality: stereotyping or projection?  / Sanne van Oosten.

Electoral Studies, 80 (2022) (nov), p. 1-11
bron: Electoral Studies jaargang: 80 (2022)(nov), p. 1-11
samenvatting: Political party gatekeepers of candidate lists fear that voters stereotype Muslim politicians as homophobic. But do voters really do this? Building on the literatures on political psychology, political inclusion, homonationalism and populism, I juxtapose stereotyping and projection as two distinct mechanisms that shape voter expectations. I asked 3056 respondents in France, Germany, and the Netherlands what they expect of Muslim and non-religious politicians through conjoint experiments. I found that voters with lukewarm attitudes towards homosexuality tend to stereotype Muslim politicians as homophobic, while voters with strong positive or negative attitudes towards homosexuality tend to project their own opinions onto politicians, be they Muslim or non-religious. Voters who are the most in favor of same-sex adoption also feel the most similar to Muslims and their perceived similarity predicts expectations of Muslim politicians. These findings cast doubt on the dilemmas party gatekeepers struggle with to include Muslim politicians on electoral lists.

Masculinity and Sexuality in Populist Radical Right Leadership  / Nik Linders, Stefan Dudink and Niels Spierings.

Politics & Gender (2022) 2 (sep), p. 1-22
bron: Politics & Gender (2022) 2 (sep), p. 1-22
samenvatting: Research shows that masculinity and sexuality are pivotal to the leadership and success of the populist radical right (PRR). In particular, normative conceptions of masculinity, as seen in gendered nationalism, have been argued to be important to the appeal of PRR parties. However, the supply side of this dynamic remains understudied. To fill this gap, this article uses critical discourse analysis to analyze the role of masculinity and sexuality in the self-positioning and envisioned hegemonies of the most successful Dutch PRR leaders: Pim Fortuyn, Geert Wilders, and Thierry Baudet. The Dutch case is particularly insightful as it presents a diverse array of PRR parties in one country context. We found crucial similarities and differences between the discourses of these leaders. Our findings suggest that masculinity and sexuality, while constitutive at the party level, are largely negotiable or nondefining for the larger party family. These findings problematize often-made identifications of PRR politics with a one-of-a-kind conservative ideology of gender and sexuality.

Homopopulism: A new layer of LGBTQ politics in India  / Niharika Banerjea.

Sexualities, 26 (2023) 1-2 (jan-feb), p. 12-36
bron: Sexualities jaargang: 26 (2023) 1-2 (jan-feb), p. 12-36
samenvatting: This paper seeks to conceptualize homopopulism as a popular relationality in shifting contexts of inclusion/exclusion of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer (LGBTQ) identified persons. A new layer of queer politics is visible in contemporary India. Hinged between older colonial discourses, current neoliberal systems, and promises by state actors to include LGBTQ concerns, sexuality is explicitly and implicitly mobilized to create, claim, and resist the present social. This consists of organizational left and liberal efforts to include and represent LGBTQ identified bodies in election promises, with effects that are titled heavily toward the middle to upper-middle class, able, caste-Hindu bodies. Alongside this, groups such as Queer Hindu Alliance are working to claim a stake in the Hindutva regime. Parallel to this, the bodies and voices of queer and trans* persons aim and struggle to connect with Muslim and Dalit individuals and groups around survival and citizenship. This paper attempts to comprehend these unique and tumultuous moments through the concept of homopopulism. I argue that homopopulism offers a useful reference point to understand how a complex democracy, consisting of right-wing, left-liberal, and centrist state practices, uses populist discourses and methods to gradually mobilize LGBTQ identities for thin centered ideologies without necessarily having to create a recognizable population group with affirmative action policies and anti-discriminatory guarantees, as facilitating conditions for a liveable life.

Homophobie ohne Homophobe : Gender und Sexualitat im internationalen Rechtspopulismus  / Adrian Daub.

bron:
