Gender relations in urban middle-class and low-income households in Mexico  / Brígida García, Orlandina Oliveira.

Mexico: El Colegio de Mexico, 1993 - 30 bl.
uitgave: Mexico : El Colegio de Mexico, 1993 - 30 bl.
onderwerpen:
thema:
  1. antropologie
  2. homoseksualiteit

Identity as a 'patchwork' : aspects of identity among low-income Brazilian travestis  / Marcos Roberto Vieira Garcia.

Culture, Health and Sexuality, 11 (2009) 6 (aug), p. 611-623
bron: Culture, Health and Sexuality jaargang: 11 (2009) 6 (aug), p. 611-623
samenvatting: This paper is based on findings from a qualitative study that took place within the context of a four-year healthcare programme directed towards low-income travestis in the central area of Satildeo Paulo, Brazil. Throughout the study the formation of social identity among travestis was investigated through a focus on four axes: gender, body, work and violence. This paper subjects the identity of the travestis to a critical analysis and proposes a view of their sense of self as a 'patchwork' assembled through the assimilation of various fragments of identity common in Brazilian society. The primary identities assimilated by the travestis under study were, in the area of femininity, the submissive woman, the puta ['whore'] and the super-seductive woman and, in the area of masculinity, the viado ['queer'], the malandro ['rascal'] and the bandido ['bandit']. The resulting travesti identity exhibited not only gender ambiguity, but also contradictions among the feminine identities described, as well as among the masculine ones.

Care of the body among low-income travestis  / Marcos Roberto Vieira Garcia.

samenvatting: This article is part of a broader study seeking to understand identity formation among low-income travestis. The research stems from a health promotion project of nearly four years, focusing on a group that held meetings at a public institution in central Sao Paulo. Drawing on research on travestis the author ... et al. seek to analyze their relation with the body. They found representations among them that confer an ambiguous character to the body, as simultaneously containing masculine and feminine elements in constant "struggle". This was revealed in their problematization of their penis, of ejaculation, and of sex reassignment surgery. An intense concern with bodily transformation was reflected in their search for a voluptuous and seductive body, revealing an internalization of the identity of a "superseductive woman".

Claiming Citizenship, Contesting Civility : The Institutional LGBT Movement and the Regulation of Gender/ Sexual Dissidence in West Bengal, India  / Aniruddha Dutta.

Jindal Global Law Review, 4 (2012) 1 (aug), p. 110-141
bron: Jindal Global Law Review jaargang: 4 (2012) 1 (aug), p. 110-141
samenvatting: This essay examines the ongoing construction of gender/ sexual identities and minorities as claimants to legitimate citizenship and civic participation as a process that tends to exclude or discipline diverse practices and subject positions at the intersections of gender/ sexual and class/ caste marginality. Through a situated study of the interactions between the institutionalised LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender; particularly GBT) movement in West Bengal, India and lower class/caste individuals and communities that inhabit gendered positions of marginality, the article argues that while they are often positioned within the institutional movement either as subjects of welfare or inadequate citizens who need to be trained to become worthy of rights, they may contest such regulatory practices and attendant exclusionary definitions of civility and citizenship. The article explores how these contestations might provide the ground for imagining more radical practices of gender/ sexual dissidence than those accommodated by liberal discourses of equality and rights.
