Friend hoppers, pleasure activism, the Schlampagne and the Octopus : Non-monogamous activism in the German lesbian-feminist subculture  / Gwendolin Altenhoefer.

Electronic Journal of Human Sexuality, 12 (2009) (2 aug)
bron: Electronic Journal of Human Sexuality jaargang: 12 (2009)(2 aug)
samenvatting: Based on interviews with six activists, this article sketches four different approaches to activism around non-monogamous relationship concepts in the German lesbian-feminist subculture in the past thirty years. The activists cover an age range from 21 to 51, share a feminist background and are each additionally influenced by different subcultures such as socialist, sex-positive, queer, riot grrrl and bdsm communities. Motivations, goals, achievements and difficulties of the poly-activists are described and the intersection between activism questioning mono-normativity and personal experiences of activists is discussed.

samenvatting: Most social scientific work on intimate relationships has assumed a monogamous structure, or has considered anything other than monogamy only in the context of 'infidelity'. Yet, in recent years there has been a growing interest among researchers and the public in exploring various patterns of intimacy that involve open non-monogamy. This volume gathers contributions from academics, activists, and practitioners throughout the world to explore non-monogamous relationships. Featuring both empirical and theoretical pieces, contributors examine the history and cultural basis of various forms of non-monogamy, experiences of non-monogamous living, psychological understandings of relationship patterns, language and emotion, the discursive construction of mono-normativity as well as issues of race, class, disability, sexuality and gender. This volume will be of interest to academics and practitioners working in the social sciences and anyone who is seeking greater insight into the intricacies of non-monogamous relationships.

Internalized Binegativity, LGBQ + Community Involvement, and Definitions of Bisexuality  / Amanda M. Pollitt & Tangela S. Roberts.

Journal of Bisexuality, 21 (2021) 3 (jul-sep), p. 357-379
bron: Journal of Bisexuality jaargang: 21 (2021) 3 (jul-sep), p. 357-379
samenvatting: Bisexual people can internalize stigma from both heterosexual and gay/lesbian communities, which often occurs in the form of monosexism, the belief that people should only be attracted to one gender. Although community involvement is protective for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and queer+ (LGBQ+) people, bisexual people may benefit more from bisexual-specific communities than LGBQ + communities because of monosexism. Further, how bisexual people define their identity may be related to internalized binegativity, especially given the historical invisibility of bisexuality in mainstream media and recent debates about the definition of bisexuality within LGBQ + communities. We examined LGBQ + and bisexual-specific community involvement, definitions of bisexuality, and internalized binegativity among an online sample of 816 bisexual adults. Multivariate regression analyses showed that those with spectrum definitions, which acknowledged a nuanced understanding of sex, gender, and sexuality, reported lower internalized binegativity than those with binary definitions, which described sexuality as consistent with mainstream norms. Involvement in LGBQ + communities, but not bisexual communities, was associated with lower internalized binegativity. There was no interaction between type of definition and type of community involvement. Our results suggest that broad community involvement may be protective for internalized binegativity, but findings should be considered in light of a lack of well-funded, local bisexual communities. The current study adds to a growing literature on sexual minority stressors among bisexual people, a population that continues to be understudied.

Bisexuality/Plurisexuality in Romantic Relationships: Making Space for Bisexuality/Plurisexuality?  / Emiel Maliepaard.

Journal of Bisexuality, 21 (2021) 4 (oct-dec), p. 560-580
bron: Journal of Bisexuality jaargang: 21 (2021) 4 (oct-dec), p. 560-580
samenvatting: This article - originally published in a Dutch peer-reviewed journal but updated with extra theoretical discussions - is a tentative exploration of the positions that bisexuality/plurisexuality can occupy in romantic relationships. On the basis of interviews with 31 bisexual/plurisexual people (21 women, 10 men), I discuss how bisexuality is experienced in romantic relationships. Romantic relationships are not just an agreement between partners, but are also constituted by networks of emotions, feelings, and meanings from oneself, one's partner(s), the social environment, and the wider social world. This article discusses the experiences of bisexual/plurisexual people's in romantic relationships and reveals the importance of antibisexual stereotypes, mononormativity, and the institutionalization of monogamy as contextual factors but also interpersonal and intrapsychic factors in negotiations of bisexuality/plurisexuality in relations. Partners are, as the experiences of the participants show, not just "passive actors" but may also proactively create space for bisexuality/plurisexuality in romantic relationships.

The Refusal to Refuse: Bisexuality Trouble and the Hegemony of Monosexuality  / Hannah McCann.

Journal of Bisexuality, 22 (2022) 1 (jan-mar), p. 71-89
bron: Journal of Bisexuality jaargang: 22 (2022) 1 (jan-mar), p. 71-89
samenvatting: This paper both revisits and productively draws on Judith Butler's theory of sexuality offered in Gender Trouble, to consider how this foundational queer theory text inadvertently works to contain and bracket plurisexualities such as bisexuality. I consider how Butler at once rejects the idea of originary bisexuality provoked by psychoanalytic discourse on polymorphous perversity yet subsumes bisexual oppression into that of homosexuality. I interrogate Butler's monosexual presumptions to extend their notion of the heterosexual matrix to account for an operational hetero/homo binary that both excludes plurisexuality as its Other and obscures this exclusion. Following this theoretical line, I consider how the asymmetric hetero/homo binary has been coded along the lines of comedy/tragedy in culture, and in contrast how bisexuality and other plurisexualities are often rendered impossible. I suggest that plurisexualities, representing a refusal to refuse the originary prohibition, ?haunt? both straight and queer contexts alike.
