Ranging widely across premodern European thought and culture, Leah DeVun reveals how and why efforts to define "the human" so often hinged on ideas about hermaphrodites. DeVun examines a host of thinkers-theologians, cartographers, natural philosophers, lawyers, poets, surgeons, and alchemists-who used ideas about hermaphrodites as conceptual tools to order their political, cultural, and natural worlds. She reconstructs the cultural landscape navigated by individuals whose sex or gender did not fit the binary alongside debates about animality, sexuality, race, religion, and human nature. The Shape of Sex charts an embrace of hermaphroditism in early Christianity, its brutal erasure at the turn of the thirteenth century, and a new enthusiasm for hermaphroditic transformations at the dawn of the Renaissance. Along the way, DeVun explores beliefs that Adam and Jesus were hermaphrodites; images of "monstrous races" in encyclopedias, maps, and illuminated manuscripts; justifications for violence against purportedly hermaphroditic outsiders such as Jews and Muslims; and the surgical "correction" of bodies that seemed to flout binary divisions. In a moment when questions about sex, gender, and identity have become incredibly urgent, The Shape of Sex casts new light on a complex and often contradictory past. It shows how premodern thinkers created a system of sex and embodiment that both anticipates and challenges modern beliefs about what it means to be male, female-and human.

These cultural conflicts were fueled by the discovery of a new world, by the Reformation and the backlash against it, by nascent republicanism directed against dissolute kings, and by the rise of empirical science and its subsequent confrontation with the traditional university system. For the Renaissance imagination, the hermaphrodite came to symbolize these profound and intense changes that swept across Europe, literally embodying these conflicts. Focusing on early modern France, with references to Switzerland and Germany, this work traces the symbolic use of the hermaphrodite across a range of disciplines and domains - medical, alchemical, philosophical, poetic, fictional, and political - and demonstrates how these seemingly disparate realms interacted extensively with each other in this period, also across national boundaries. This widespread use and representation of the hermaphrodite established a ground on which new ideas concerning sex and gender could be elaborated by subsequent generations, and on which a wide range of thought concerning identity, racial, religious, and national as well as gender, could be deployed.

samenvatting: Im Jahr 2015 entdeckte ich bei einer meiner vielen Recherchen zu antiquarischen trans* Büchern ein Werk von 1910, von dem ich noch nie etawas gehört hatte und zu denn ich online rein gar nichts herausfinen konnte. Es trug den Titel "Aus dem Tagebuche einer männlichen Gymnasiastin", der/die Autor*in war anonym. Wovon handelt das Buch. In Tagebuchnotizen wird die Geschichte eines Mädchen an einem Gymnasium erzählt, das dort zwar allerlei erlebt, sich aber nie als so richtig dazugehörend empfindet. Außerdem fühlt es esich zu Mädchen hingezogen. Aber Homoseksualität galt im frÜhen Zwanzigsten Jahrhundert als "unsittlic"und wurde kriminalisiert. Im Laufe der Zeit stellt sich heraus, dass das Mädchen eigentlich ein Junge ist, dass sich schon die Hebamme bei der Geburt nicht ganz sicher gewsen sei, das KInd aber als Mädchen erzogen wurde. Nun, wo die weibliche Pubertät nicht sttfindet und der Körper allmählich männlicher wird - mit Bartwuchs und eher männlichen "Proportionen", wird der Hausartzt hingezogen. Un dieser befindet, dass das Kind doch wohl eher ein Junge sei. Und dann wechselt das Mädchen die Rolle und wird zum Jungen, was natürlich einiges Aufsehen erregt.
