Once-married lesbians : facilitating changing life patterns  / Karen L. Bridges, James M. Croteau.

Journal of Counseling and Development, 73 (1994) 2, p. 134-140
bron: Journal of Counseling and Development jaargang: 73 (1994) 2 , p. 134-140
samenvatting: Many women have undergone a significant life transition from a heterosexual marriage to a lesbian life pattern. As facilitators of life transitions, counselors can play an important role in minimizing the pain and maximizing the growth involved in such a change. This article provides counselors with information about the diversity of this life transition and then discusses three areas in which counselors may facilitate this process by helping clients to (a) develop a positive identity as a lesbian, (b) adapt to their relationships with women partners, and (c) deal with work?related issues arising from the changed life pattern.

Journal of LGBT Issues in Counseling, 5 (2011) 3/4 (jul-dec), p. 163-179
bron: Journal of LGBT Issues in Counseling jaargang: 5 (2011) 3/4 (jul-dec), p. 163-179
samenvatting: This article addresses the interconnectedness between gay identity and spiritual development as well as explores the unique challenges that lesbian, gay, and bisexual individuals face when trying to incorporate a sense of spirituality into their sexual identity. This article addresses what counselors and other mental health practitioners can do to help facilitate spiritual exploration with their sexual minority clients and reexamine the notion of "faith development" and what it means for lesbian, gay, and bisexual clients to find the spirit within. The article also presents traditional and nontraditional methods to find spiritual fulfillment by introducing a four-part counseling framework and how this can contribute to overall mental health. Peculiar and Queer: Spiritual and Emotional Salvation for the LGBTQ Mormon  / R. David Johns, Fred J. Hanna.

Journal of LGBT Issues in Counseling, 5 (2011) 3/4 (jul-dec), p. 197-219
bron: Journal of LGBT Issues in Counseling jaargang: 5 (2011) 3/4 (jul-dec), p. 197-219
samenvatting: Clients who are lesbian, bisexual, gay, transgendered, or queer (LBGTQ) and members or former members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (sometimes referred to as the Mormon or LDS Church) face a distinctive spiritual conundrum. Often people see LDS members as having "peculiar" beliefs. These "peculiar" beliefs and the social system of the Latter-day Saints distinguish them from other forms of Christianity, and create a paradigm of conflict for those who do not fit in the mold of the Mormon doctrine. In this article the authors examine issues of spirituality and religiosity, examine the literature with regard to effective counseling for LGBTQ Mormons, and review LDS Church doctrines, extracted from seminal works of the LDS Church. These are examined to better explore the difficulties of LGBTQ people and explore the meanings of peculiar and queer and their relevance to the issues of LGBTQ Mormons. Finally the authors address how oppression relates to spirituality and orientation as well as examine the similarities of spiritual formation and sexual identity formation. Understanding these complex spiritual issues will offer a possible solution for counselors who work with this "peculiar and queer" population. As multicultural competence includes addressing issues of spirituality, clinicians will benefit from an increased understanding of the spiritual and religious dilemmas for members of the LDS Church who question a dichotomous view of sexuality. Lesbian, Bisexual, and Queer Women's Spirituality in Feminist Multicultural Counseling  / Whitney B. Hagen ... [et al.].

Journal of LGBT Issues in Counseling, 5 (2011) 3/4 (jul-dec), p. 220-236
bron: Journal of LGBT Issues in Counseling jaargang: 5 (2011) 3/4 (jul-dec), p. 220-236
samenvatting: This article discusses considerations for integrating spirituality into feminist multicultural counseling (FMC) with diverse lesbian, bisexual, and queer (LBQ) women clients. First, the authors describe the historical conflict between LBQ women and conservative religions and explain how hierarchical, patriarchal assumptions and values of conservative religions may have a negative effect on well-being and empowerment. Second, the authors describe the positive influences of affirming religions and spiritualities on LBQ women's resilience within oppressive sociocultural contexts. Third, the authors explore the relevance of FMC when integrating spirituality into counseling with LBQ women. Fourth, the authors provide an overview of a model of FMC framework for integrating spirituality into FMC. Finally, we provide a client vignette example. A Narratology of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Clients' Experiences Addressing Religious and Spiritual Issues in Counseling  / Juleen K. Buser ... [et al.].

Journal of LGBT Issues in Counseling, 5 (2011) 3/4 (jul-dec), p. 282-303
bron: Journal of LGBT Issues in Counseling jaargang: 5 (2011) 3/4 (jul-dec), p. 282-303
samenvatting: Although spiritual and religious themes have been found to be salient for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT) individuals, a paucity of research has explored how these themes are attended to in the counseling context. This qualitative investigation used a narratology approach to explore the counseling experiences of seven LGBT clients around spiritual and religious issues. The narrative which emerged included (a) negative counseling experiences, (b) client perseverance in locating additional counseling, (c) positive counseling experiences, and (d) a reframing of counselor responsibility. The results of this study contain implications for future research, clinical practice, and counselor training. [ Copies are available at http://www.tandf.co.uk/journals/haworth-journals.asp ]

The Church, the Closet, and the Couch: The Counselor's Role in Assisting Clients to Integrate Their Sexual Orientation and Religious Identity  / Misty M. Ginicola, Cheri Smith.

Journal of LGBT Issues in Counseling, 5 (2011) 3/4 (jul-dec), p. 304-326
bron: Journal of LGBT Issues in Counseling jaargang: 5 (2011) 3/4 (jul-dec), p. 304-326
samenvatting: In a recent article in The New York Times, therapy using Sexual Orientation Management was highlighted, with the focus on therapists assisting clients to live a heterosexual life because of their religious beliefs. The primary reasons for such an approach are to allow for client choice and respect on an equally important area of diversity, their religious affiliation and values. Although research has been performed on the intersection of religion and sexual orientation, there has not been an extensive analysis or criticism of this management technique. In this article, the authors explore the experience of religious clients struggling with their sexual orientation, discuss the potential counselor responses to sexual orientation religious issues, and the impact of each on the counseling field using ethical principles, existing research, and logical outcomes. Social and Health Service Use and Treatment Outcomes for Sexual Minorities in a National Sample of Substance Abuse Treatment Programs  / Melissa Hardesty ... [et al].

Journal of Gay and Lesbian Social Services, 24 (2012) 2 (apr-june), p. 97-118
bron: Journal of Gay and Lesbian Social Services jaargang: 24 (2012) 2 (apr-june), p. 97-118
samenvatting: This study examines substance use severity, levels of social and health service utilization, and the impact of service utilization on treatment outcomes for sexual minorities versus non-minorities. The sample included 3,094 clients from the National Treatment Improvement Evaluation Study (NTIES). Substance use severity among sexual minorities and non-sexual minorities was similar at treatment entry and at 12 months post-discharge. Differences in social and health service utilization were significant for substance abuse counseling and health services. Significant interactions between sexuality and access services and sexuality and mental health services were also found. Practice and research implications are discussed.
