samenvatting: Throughout 2020, domestic spaces have become places of comfort and refuge, love and loss, hopelessness, and hope, in the face of the Covid-19 pandemic. Home is where we bake banana bread, scroll through news feeds, and contemplate the shifting world - but also the space we use to define and ground ourselves against the turbulent outside world. People who are part of the LGBTQ+ community, especially in conservative countries like Russia, have long been familiar with the power a home can provide. In Russia, especially outside of Moscow and St Petersburg, safe spaces for LGBTQ+ people are scarce. The street, workplaces, and family homes, all have potential to turn hostile. Personal spaces have always been queer sanctuaries of peace, pleasure, and self-actualisation. Especially for The Calvert Journal, photographer Miliyollie captured Russia's LGBTQ+ people in their homes. Conducted remotely through subjects' phones, the shoot has allowed LGBTQ+ people to shine and embody their true selves - all from the comfort and safety of their own domestic spaces.

samenvatting: Russia finally has a magazine for its LGBTQ+ youth, and its founders are just getting started on a queer revolution. O-zine - the title of the magazine - was conceived by Dmitry Kozachenko, who made his big break writing for Russian lifestyle publication Afisha daily. Openly gay and with a passion for contemporary queer culture, he felt that it was time Russia had a platform for its young LGBTQ+ community. Kozachenko started O-zine together with Sasha Kazantseva, the author of a popular Telegram blog on lesbian sex entitled Washed Hands, and a handful of collaborators; the project is completely self-funded and runs on the dedication of its team. The Calvert Journal talked to both founders about their goals, challenges, and life in the Russian queer community.

samenvatting: The year 2020 has been difficult for Russian LGBTQ community. But despite the increasing governmental pressure, the queer underground - or perhaps more accurately, the digitally-powered, queer parallel universe - is thriving. This new visibility, however, is not limited to content platforms. It's also about the people who are open and outspoken about their life and experiences. The representation they create is radical, although it might not always look like that: it can also be soft, fun, light-hearted, and even seemingly mundane. This openness is an equivalent of holding hands on the street: a gesture so small, but so significant for queer couples. This generation is creating the new language of love and intimacy which was previously non-existent for Russia's LGBTQ youth.

samenvatting: The phenomenon of the new wave of Russian queer culture was not entirely new. When official rhetoric posits 'Russianness' and 'queerness' as mutually exclusive, it can be easy to forget the country's rich and proud queer history. The video for Angel Ulyanov's single - Let's Stir Things Up - ("Davai Zamutim") is an example of an intriguing dispatch from the new wave of Russian queer culture. It demonstrates that a creative underground is on the rise, willing and ready to explore its identity, without shying away from "Russianness" or the hostile surroundings they are caught in. At times, the Russian authorities want people to believe that queerness is a quality of the decadent and immoral West, while Russia is a stronghold of masculinity and traditional family values. But according to Vlad Strukov, Associate Professor in Film and Digital Culture at the University of Leeds, who is currently working on a project on Russian queer visual culture funded by the Swedish Research Council, there are plentiful examples of Russian queer culture from different eras.
