Differences in HIV Risk Practices Sought by Self-Identified Gay and Bisexual Men Who Use Internet Websites to Identify Potential Sexual Partners  / Hugh Klein.

Journal of Bisexuality, 9 (2009) 2 (april), p. 125-140
bron: Journal of Bisexuality jaargang: 9 (2009) 2 (april), p. 125-140
samenvatting: Men who have sex with men (MSM) account for the largest number of persons diagnosed with AIDS in the United States, with higher-than-average rates of drug use and unprotected sex being cited as the principal reasons underlying their high rates of HIV infection. Recent evidence has suggested that the use of Websites specifically designed to promote unsafe sexual practices (e.g., Bareback.com, BarebackRT.com, Bare4ever.com) may be particularly common among MSM, thereby fostering their risky behaviors. In light of these findings, the present study, which compares HIV risk behaviors sought by self-identified gay and bisexual men, is based on a content analysis of 1,316 ads/profiles posted on one of the most popular men who have sex with other men (MSM) Websites (namely, Bareback.com) that specifically fosters unprotected sex. Ads/profiles were selected randomly based on the American ZIP code of residence. Data were collected between September 2006 and January 2007. Rates of advertised-for high-risk sexual behaviors were very high for gay and bisexual men alike, particularly for oral sex involving ejaculation into the mouth, anal sex involving ejaculation into the anus, multiple partner sex, and felching (i.e., eating ejaculatory fluid out of an anus into which at least one person previously ejaculated). Analytical comparisons of gay and bisexual men showed that, on various dimensions, the bisexual men in this sample had either similar or lower levels of sexual risk compared to the gay men. The HIV intervention-related implications of these findings are discussed. [ Copies are available at http://www.tandf.co.uk/journals/haworth-journals.asp ]

Sun, Sand, and Citizenship: The Marketing of Gay Tourism  / David R. Coon.

Journal of Homosexuality, 59 (2012) 4 (april), p. 511-534
bron: Journal of Homosexuality jaargang: 59 (2012) 4 (april), p. 511-534
samenvatting: This article investigates trends in the marketing of gay and lesbian tourism. It reviews gay and lesbian travel guides from the 1960s to the 1990s before examining more recent travel materials including brochures and Web sites promoting specific American cities. These promotional materials are a valuable object of inquiry because they are uniquely situated at the intersection of discussions of sexuality, the market, representation, space, and citizenship. Through an aggregate semiotic analysis and ideological criticism, this article examines themes and concerns raised by the recent wave of gay tourism marketing, including questions of visibility, privacy, and assimilation. I argue that while marketers' recent attempts to lure gay and lesbian tourists to specific destinations may seem to suggest increased tolerance and societal inclusion, the specific strategies that they employ actually reveal the second-class citizen status still experienced by gays and lesbians within the rest of American society. Masculinity, mass consumerism and subversive sex : A case study of Second Life's 'Zeus' gay club  / Jude Elund.

Sexualities, 16 (2013) 3/4 (jun), p. 423-444
bron: Sexualities jaargang: 16 (2013) 3/4 (jun), p. 423-444
samenvatting: This article is a case study of a Second Life region in reference to the prevailing attitudes of sexual conservatism and the growing acceptance of homosexual coupling. The site of Zeus is a contested site of legitimacy in view of tensions regarding masculinity as it applies to sex, sexuality, gender conformity and consumption practices. Furthermore, it is representative of the tensions between an acceptable, albeit conservative gay male identity, and the subversive hyper-sexual and hyper-masculine subject of desire.

From queer to gay to Queer.pl : The names we dare to speak in Poland  / Lukasz Szulc.

Lambda Nordica, 117 (2012) 4, p. 65-98
bron: Lambda Nordica jaargang: 117 (2012) 4 , p. 65-98
samenvatting: The Western narrative of the development of names for sexual minorities often goes from queer to gay and back to queer. These name changes mark the progress achieved in both Western activism (from no activism to assimilationist activism to in-your-face activism) and academia (from no studies to gay and lesbian studies to queer studies). Additionally, this trajectory often functions as a model for people in other countries. While acknowledging the global influence of the US "gay" culture and activism as well as US academic tradition, we still may ask: Is the story necessarily so much the same elsewhere and at other times? This paper addresses the question in relation to Poland. Do Polish terms for sexual minorities follow the Western path of development? What challenges do we face while adapting English names, and in particular queer, in Poland? Drawing on the analysis of an online discussion about the recently announced name change of the biggest Polish LGBT portal from Innastrona.pl [Differentpage.pl] to Queer.pl, I examine how different factors influence the choice and perception of specific self-descriptions. In the conclusions, I argue that the adoption of queer by Queer.pl is neither a backward move, as it fails to reclaim anything in the Polish cultural context, nor a forward move, as it indicates no shift towards either a more inyour-face form of activism or a more poststructuralist kind of thinking.

Locating Kazakhstan : The role of LGBT voices in the Asia/Europe debate  / Samuel Buelow.

Lambda Nordica, 17 (2012) 4, p. 99-125
bron: Lambda Nordica jaargang: 17 (2012) 4 , p. 99-125
samenvatting: Spanning both Europe and Asia geographically, Kazakhstan can be and is interpreted as an Asian, European, and/or Eurasian state. This debate as to what/where is Kazakhstan continues in LGBT themed cultural production and the ambiguity is used to make statements about the conditions for LGBT people in Kazakhstan. This article situates this debate in a broader discussion of East and West and of Orientalism. LGBT themed websites contest the position of Kazakhstan, using available discourse that places East and West in a spatialized, temporalized, and hierarchical relationship in which West is above, ahead of, and superior to East. Both East and West are portrayed as different forms of Utopia, an achievable Western form and a fantastical Eastern form, with Kazakhstan occupying a non-Utopian middle ground. In this article, the global South, represented here by Brazil, also becomes Orientalized and in essence becomes the East?s Utopian East. Photo essays about a Kazakh drag queen and gay couple who have moved from Kazakhstan to Brazil are examined in detail. The LGBT websites Gay.kz and Gay.ru are also used to demonstrate the way that Kazakhstan is positioned in LGB discourse along the East/West slope, particularly in relation to Russia.
