samenvatting: Leo Igwe is the executive secretary of the Nigerian Humanist Movement. He writes an essay about same gender marriage tradition between two women in Igboland, according to the African culture and tradition. Igboland is a geographic expression that describes and includes the cultural reach and indigenous area of the Igbo people, in southeastern Nigeria. Traditionally, in Igboland community, marriage is taken to be a union between a man and a woman as the case may be. But there are circumstances where a marriage between a woman and a woman is permissible. In a situation where a woman has no son or no child, if the husband dies, it is culturally allowed for her to marry a wife. And in this case, she becomes the husband.

samenvatting: This paper examines the concept of female husbands in Igbo land, southeastern Nigeria. It highlights the issues that necessitated and sustained the phenomenon, and the perpetual conflict and dichotomy within the connotations and ideas of patriarchy in Igbo land. While distinguishing it from lesbianism as practiced elsewhere, the paper argues that unlike other societies, women to women marriages in Igbo land were not contracted in response to the sexual emotions or attractions of the couples, but simply an instrument for the preservation and extension of patriarchy and its traditions. The paper also argues that the concept of Female husband in Igbo land served more of the interest of patriarchy than contend against it. It concludes that the two gender nomenclatures; patriarchy and matriarchy should be re-conceptualized to reflect the eclecticism that has been present in gender relations overtime.

Barendregt verdiept zich in deze scriptie in de vraag of dit wel zo is. Over de vraag wat de definitie van een vrouwenhuwelijk in Afrika is zijn de wetenschappers het eens: 'Een vrouw betaalt een bruidsprijs voor een andere vrouw en daarmee de kinderen van die vrouw en kan daarmee de kinderen van die vrouw als haar legale afstammelingen kan beschouwen.'

samenvatting: Nwando Achebe writes that "woman-to-woman marriage in Africa has absolutely nothing to do with homosexuality" ... and I actually agree with this ... kind of. While I strongly believe in pre-colonial lesbian secret societies littered across the African continent, at the risk of falling into the trap of Eurocentric and Western (mis)understanding of African social institutions, it should be made clear that the institution in which women were allowed to marry women was not created to facilitate gay marriage. In fact, another researcher, Kenneth Chukwuemeka labels woman-to-woman marriage "an improvisation to sustain patriarchy" and "simply an instrument for the preservation and extension of patriarchy and its traditions", the basic argument being that in Igbo society the male child was of utmost importance and it was in this obsession to have a male child to continue the lineage that woman-to-woman marriage came about* (and also apparently because when a female husband wants to marry a wife, a male relative is required to do the talking for her).

samenvatting: Challenging the received orthodoxies of social anthropology, Ifi Amadiume argues that in precolonial society, sex and gender did not necessarily coincide. Examining the structures that enabled women to achieve power, she shows that roles were neither rigidly masculinized nor feminized. Economic changes in colonial times undermined women?s status and reduced their political role and Dr Amadiume maintains, patriarchal tendencies introduced by colonialism persist today, to the detriment of women. Critical of the chauvinist stereotypes established by colonial anthropology, the author stresses the importance of recognizing women?s economic activities as as essential basis of their power. She is also critical of those western feminists who, when relating to African women, tend to accept the same outmoded projections.
