Homophobia as the State of Reason : The Case of Postcolonial Trinidad and Tobago  / Amar Wahab.

GLQ : A Journal of Lesbian and Gay Studies, 18 (2012) 4, p. 481-505
bron: GLQ : A Journal of Lesbian and Gay Studies jaargang: 18 (2012) 4 , p. 481-505
samenvatting: In the Western imagination, the postcolonial Caribbean is often stigmatized as enacting some of the most homophobic nationalisms, serving as a useful counterpoint to frame liberal democratic nations as vanguard (especially enshrining LGBTQ subjects as rights deserving). As such, those nations positioned at the margins of Western modernity are seen to bear strong proclivities to an immature modernity or even premodern (regressive) condition. This simplistic analysis elides any discussion of how homophobic nationalisms in postcolonial settings are more complicated and suggestive of a different (albeit contentious) engagement with modernity. In fact, the hardening of homophobic nationalisms forces us to question how and why, in particular settings such as postcolonial Trinidad and Tobago, compulsory homophobia is deployed as a form of moral management that is compatible with postcolonial modernity. Aim in this article is to explore this "problem space" of homophobia as a regulative and generative force in post-colonial nation-states, caught in tension between liberal disciplinary aspirations and contemporary anxieties conditioned by the colonial past. This embattled context conditions the discursive parameters that power the truth of Trinidad and Tobago?s postcolonial condition and its agonized relation to modernity.

Attitudes Towards Homosexuals in Trinidad and Tobago and the Southern Caribbean  / Alana D.D. Griffith and Peter W. Wickham.

Sargasso (2014-2015) 1 & 2, p. 107-128
bron: Sargasso (2014-2015) 1 & 2 , p. 107-128
samenvatting: This article provides an analysis of the public's attitude towards homosexuals in the twin island Republic of Trinidad and Tobago through a survey conducted in 2013. It explores the drivers of acceptance and rejection of homosexuals as well as negative and positive attitudes. Reference is also made to two other country studies of the populations of Barbados and Guyana. The paper offers an analysis of the public?s attitude toward homosexuals in the three islands and its attitude towards key legislative issues related to homosexuals and same-sex relations. It is found that there is a dissonance between the attitudes towards homosexuals expressed by Trinbagonians and their support of discrimination against gays, their hatred of gays, and support for anti-gay laws. While 36% of the population surveyed expressed outright hatred of homosexuals, 60% supported the maintenance of laws that criminalised same sex intercourse.

Erotic Islands : Art and Activism in the Queer Caribbean  /

samenvatting: In Erotic Islands, Lyndon K. Gill maps a long queer presence at a crossroads of the Caribbean. This transdisciplinary book foregrounds the queer histories of Carnival, calypso, and HIV/AIDS in the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago. At its heart is an extension of Audre Lorde's use of the erotic as theory and methodology. Gill turns to lesbian/gay artistry and activism to insist on eros as an intertwined political-sensual-spiritual lens through which to see self and society more clearly. This analysis juxtaposes revered musician Calypso Rose, renowned mas man Peter Minshall, and resilient HIV/AIDS organization Friends For Life. Erotic Islands traverses black studies, queer studies, and anthropology toward an emergent black queer diaspora studies.
