samenvatting: Magnus Hirschfeld schrieb in seiner Studie Die Transvestiten (1910/12): »Der junge Transvestit Willi Pape, dessen Veranlagung durch einen Selbstmordversuch in Frauenkleidern bekannt wurde. Seine Eltern wurden vom Verfasser über seinen eigenartigen Zustand aufgeklärt und gestatteten ihm dann, zum Varieté zu gehen, wo er seitdem mit größtem Erfolg als Schlangentänzerin auftritt.« Willy Pape (1891-1940) war unter seinem Künstlernamen Voo Doo das Tanzphänomen der Varietébühnen der 1920er-Jahre in Berlin, Zürich, Paris und Wien. Mann oder Frau? Das war immer die Frage. Klassischer Damendarsteller oder frühes Beispiel von Trans*, queer oder non-binär? Voo Doo war immer mehr Bühne als Boulevard, mehr Spitzenartist als Sternchen, mehr fleißiger Arbeiter als Salonheld. Schließlich eröffnete er einen Club, zu dessen Gästen auch Klaus Mann zählte. Den Nationalsozialisten mit einem blauen Auge entkommen, verschwand Pape in der Versenkung, war aber nie ganz vergessen. Jens Dobler erzählt das unglaubliche Leben von Willy Pape alias Voo Doo, und unternimmt damit zugleich einen Streifzug durch die große Zeit der europäischen Varietékultur.

samenvatting: 'Las memorias de Katherine' is een bewerking van 'Luminarias', een toneelstuk van Emilio Carballido. Deze bewerking is gemaakt door Maria Pia La Mistica, lid van de drag familie Galan. In de oorspronkelijke versie draait het om het leven van een zangeres die zich terugtrekt uit de cabaretwereld en haar leven wil vereeuwigen in een boek. Daarvoor huurt ze een schrijver in, Franz, die het leven van Katherine onder de loep neemt en uiteindelijk niet het leven neerschrijft dat Katherine wil vertellen: succes, triomfen, luxe en roem - maar het leven dat hij ontdekt: mislukkingen, haat, geweld, discriminatie. In deze bewerking is Katherina een Boliviaanse travestiet. De familie Galan staat bekend om haar speelse en activistische street performances in een extravagante drag-stijl, en om haar deelname aan dansgroepen tijdens het carnavalsseizoen en de patroonsfeesten in Bolivia.

Toward a historiography of the lesbian transsexual, or the TERF's nightmare  / Jules Gill-Peterson.

samenvatting: This essay asks after the possibility of making the transsexual lesbian signify as a historical mode of sexuality, as a contribution to an anti-TERF method in trans and lesbian studies. What logics of mid twentieth century gender and sexuality are responsible for the opacity of transsexual and transvestite lesbians prior to the 1970s, despite the ample evidence that desire between femmes played a central role in trans social life? To move towards such a historiography and method, the author considers two paradigmatically difficult cases. First, Louise Lawrence, a well-known trans women in the San Francisco Bay Area who transitioned entirely do-it-yourself in 1944, and whose long term relationship with a partner, Gay Elkins, is high opaque in the archival record. Second, the essay considers the compulsory heterosexuality embedded in the medical logic of transsexuality in the 1960s, arguing that the medical ontology of the transsexual vagina was itself dependent upon the avowal of its immediate and exclusive use for penetration by straight men, making transsexual lesbians implausible despite their evident existence.

samenvatting: This article positions Teresa Margolles's Ya basta hijos de puta (2018) as a refusal of trans* disappearance created by capitalistic initiatives of renovation, by the failures of the Mexican state, and by transphobic violence. Through the triangulation of three objects, a stone, a legal document, and a sound recording, intertwined with seventeen photographs of trans* people in Ciudad Juárez, Mexico, the article also proposes that Margolles's recent aesthetic shift engages transness to open up a coalitional travesti-trans* studies between the North and South. A hemispheric conversation in which praxis and theory meet and where Ya basta hijos de puta as praxis demands on feeling destruction through the 'touching' of the stone, on seeing the legal foreclosures through a death certificate, and on hearing of disappearance through the recording, the sound of the afterlife of transness.

Accompanying Perry's traveling exhibition, which opens at the Holburne Museum, Bath, in January 2020, this book features full color illustrations of his seminal ceramic works from this period.
