Burgemeester helpt belaagde transseksuelen  / Chris Klomp.

AD 23-03-2012
bron: AD 23-03-2012

'I Have a Family' : Relational Witnessing and the Evidentiary Power of Grief in the Gwen Araujo Case  /  Cynthia G. Franklin and Laura E. Lyons.

GLQ : A Journal of Lesbian and Gay Studies, 22 (2016) 3 (jun], p. 437-466
bron: GLQ : A Journal of Lesbian and Gay Studies jaargang: 22 (2016) 3 (jun], p. 437-466
samenvatting: This essay analyzes legal and cultural texts that pertain to the 2002 murder of Gwen Araujo, to argue for the political possibilities that can be mobilized through familial grief over a human rights violation against a trans person. As family members speak from their positions of having undergone a profound experience of loss and call on the affective ties that make the violation their own, their relational witnessing and testimony takes place not only in courtrooms but also in various public forms and forums. Exploring how the legal system's failures catalyze these alternative forms, we identify the political work they perform. Analyzing such texts as a victim impact statement, speeches, the TV movie A Girl Like Me, and memorial websites, we contend that relational witnessing and testimony can reconfigure heteronormative forms of kinship and other societal structures along with our conception of the victim of a human rights violation. Anti-transgender prejudice mediates the association of just world beliefs and victim blame attribution  / Dexter M. Thomas, Jonathan Amburgey and Lisa Ellis.

International Journal of Transgenderism, 17 (2016) 3-4 (jul-dec), p. 176-184
bron: International Journal of Transgenderism jaargang: 17 (2016) 3-4 (jul-dec), p. 176-184
samenvatting: Several decades of research have found that just world beliefs (BJW) predict the blaming of innocent victims and are associated with various forms of prejudice. We tested whether anti-transgender prejudice (a) uniquely predicts victim blame for a victim perceived to be of transgender spectrum experience (or trans*), apart from BJW, and (b) whether anti-transgender prejudice is a mediator of the association between BJW and victim blame. U.S. participants (N = 311) read a hypothetical crime vignette in which the victim was either perceived to be trans* by perpetrators or not, then completed measures of victim blame, BJW, and anti-transgender prejudice. In a multiple linear regression analysis, anti-transgender prejudice and the interactions of vignette with BJW and with anti-transgender prejudice were significant predictors of victim blame. There was no independent main effect for BJW, gender, or vignette. BJW was associated with victim blame only for the trans* victim. Anti-transgender prejudice was associated with victim blame for both vignettes; however, this relationship was stronger for the trans* victim. Further, anti-transgender prejudice fully mediated the relation between BJW and victim blame in both conditions. Findings suggest that anti-transgender prejudice uniquely predicts victim blaming, even for innocent victims who are not perceived to be trans*. Components of gender-nonconformity prejudice  / Katherine A. Adams ... [et al.].

International Journal of Transgenderism, 17 (2016) 3-4 (jul-dec), p. 185-198
bron: International Journal of Transgenderism jaargang: 17 (2016) 3-4 (jul-dec), p. 185-198
samenvatting: Indices were developed to assess discomfort with specific behavioral violations of gender heteronormative gender roles, gender identity, and sexual orientation. A three-component model that proposes specific threats to social status as mechanisms of gender-based prejudice was then used to assess whether homophobia and transphobia were triggered by the non-gender heteronormative social identity status of the outgroup member or by perceived violations of specific gender heteronormative behaviors. For a sample of 145 female and 194 male gender heteronormative U.S. college undergraduates, path analyses showed that homophobia was particularly associated with discomfort with violations of sexual orientation norms while transphobia was particularly associated with discomfort with violations of gender identity norms. For men and women, discomfort with sexual orientation norms significantly mediated the relationships linking right-wing authoritarianism and benevolent sexism to homophobia while discomfort with violations of gender identity norms significantly mediated the relationships linking right-wing authoritarianism and benevolent sexism to transphobia. Discomfort with sexual orientation norms significantly mediated the relationships between religious fundamentalism and homophobia for men only, while this same discomfort mediated the relationship between benevolent sexism and homophobia for women only. A significant direct path from physical aggression proneness to homophobia was found for men only. (Read more : http://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/15532739.2016.1232627)

Risk, resilience, resistance and situated agency of trans high school students  / Amy Hillier ...[et al.].

Journal of LGBT Youth, 17 (2020) 4 (okt-dec), p. 384-407
bron: Journal of LGBT Youth jaargang: 17 (2020) 4 (okt-dec), p. 384-407
samenvatting: Research on the experiences of trans youth has generally emphasized their disparate risk for negative educational, housing, and health outcomes. While drawing attention to very real vulnerabilities, these depictions can represent trans youth as one-dimensional passive victims. Some recent research draws on resiliency theory and offers a strengths-based perspective highlighting the strategies trans youth employ and the resources they draw upon in the face of challenging circumstances. In this study, we look to the concept of situated agency as a way to understand how risk and resilience simultaneously characterize the high school experiences of trans youth. Through hearing their own accounts of daily life in a large urban public school district, we seek to understand their attitudes, behavior, and choices as strategies for coping, surviving and resisting the bureaucratic structures that create conflict by upholding traditional binary gender norms. In so doing, we seek to redirect the spotlight on the practices and systems that constrain trans youth agency - rather than the trans youth, themselves - as the most appropriate focus for intervention.
