samenvatting: Testori shows us that even in a rich city as Milan poverty and the exploitation of poverty still tarnish the glitter of prosperity, and that passionately held convictions, catholic and communist, can still engender the bitterest, mutually destructive divisions among people so lacking in material resource that they cannot afford to turn their backs on unity of social purpose.

Chocolate and Other Writings on Male Homoeroticism  /

samenvatting: This volume makes available for the first time in English the work of a significant Indian nationalist author, Pandey Bechan Sharma, better known in India as 'Ugra' ('Extreme'). His book "Chocolate", a 1927 collection of eight stories, was the first work of Hindi fiction to focus on male same-sex relations, and its publication sparked India's first public debates about homosexuality. Many prominent figures, including Gandhi, weighed in on the debates, which lasted into the 1950s. This edition, translated and introduced by Ruth Vanita, includes the full text of "Chocolate" along with an excerpt from Ugra's novel "Letters of Some Beautiful Ones" (also published in 1927). In her introduction, Vanita situates Ugra and his writings in relation to Indian nationalist struggles and Hindi literary movements and feuds, and she analyzes the controversies that surrounded "Chocolate". Those outraged by the titillating portrayal of homosexuality labelled the collection obscene. On the other side, although no one explicitly defended homosexuality in public, some justified Ugra's work by arguing that it was the artist's job to educate through provocation.

Sexuality, state, and civil society in Germany, 1700-1815  /

samenvatting: "This long-awaited work reconstructs the ways in which the meanings and uses of sex changed during that important moment of political and social configuration viewed as the birth of modernity. Isabel V. Hull analyzes the shift in the "sexual system" which occurred in German-speaking Central Europe when the absolutist state relinquished its monopoly on public life and presided over the formation of an independent civil society. Hull defines a society's sexual system as the patterned way in which sexual behavior is shaped and given meaning through institutions. She shows that as the absolutist state encouraged an independent sphere of public activity, it gave up its theoretically unlimited right to regulate sexual behavior and invested this right in the active citizens of the new civil society. Among the questions posed by this political and social transformation are, When does sexual behavior merit society's regulation? What kinds of behaviors and groups prompt intervention? What interpretive framework does the public apply to sexual behavior? Hull persuades us that a culture's sexual system can be understood only in relation to the particularities of state, law, and society, and that when state and society are examined through the sexual lens, much conventional wisdom is cast in doubt."--Book jacket.

Sex Then and Now: Exploring South Africa's Sexual Histories  / Graeme Reid, Liz Walker.

South African Historical Journal, 50 (2004) 1, p. 77-83
bron: South African Historical Journal jaargang: 50 (2004) 1 , p. 77-83
samenvatting: South Africa is experiencing a crisis of sex. This contemporary crisis is evident in the shocking incidence of baby rape, child abuse, sexual violence and the high prevalence of HIV/AIDS. Public outcry and media outrage often manifest themselves in moral panics over matters of sexuality. These angry responses suggest that this is a new phenomenon, born of the transition to democracy and the resulting the unsettling of sexual identities and norms. For example, the profileration of adult sex shops, the availability of pornographic material and explicit safer sex messaging in the public domain represent a dramatic shift from the repressive and prurient practices of the apartheid era. While the Christian national model promoted the heterosexual nuclear family as an ideal type, the 996 Constitution allowed for liberal definitions of the family, promoted gender equality and patriarchal sexuality were fundamentally breached. Medical aids and pension scheme are now compelled to recognise same-sex partnershis, while the South African Law Sommission continues to deliberate the complexities of different forms of marriage and domestic partnership.

samenvatting: Executive Summary : More than 11.3 million LGBT adults live in the U.S. They are a part of every community throughout the country, and they are diverse in terms of personal characteristics, socioeconomic outcomes, health status, and lived experiences. While LGBT people are similar to their non-LGBT counterparts in many ways, they also show differences that illuminate their unique needs and experiences related to sexual orientation and gender identity. About 60% of LGBT adults identify as White. In this report, we analyze data from several sources to provide information about adults who self-identify as White and LGBT. We present an overview of their demographic characteristics and focus on several key domains of well-being, including mental health, physical health, economic health, and social and cultural experiences. In addition, we compare White LGBT and non-LGBT adults across these indicators in order to explore differences related to sexual orientation and gender identity among White Americans. For several key indicators, we also compare White LGBT and non-LGBT women with White LGBT and non-LGBT men in order to explore differences related to gender. This report is part of a larger series, LGBT Well-Being at the Intersection of Race, which provides the same information for each racial/ethnic minority group in the United States. A final comparative report examines differences across racial groups among LGBT people.

The history of marriage equality in Ireland : a social revolution begins  /

Sonja Tiernan.Manchester: Manchester University Press, 2020 - xxvi, 165 p.
uitgave: Manchester: Manchester University Press, 2020 - xxvi, 165 p.

samenvatting: Ireland is the first country in the world to extend civil marriage to same sex couples through a public vote. The marriage equality referendum saw record numbers turn out to register their votes including Irish emigrants who returned from around the world to ensure an impressive majority in favour of this constitutional amendment. The overwhelming positive result marked a clear separation of church and State for possibly the first time in Ireland. The Yes Equality campaign ignited a social revolution across Ireland, witnessed more recently with further referenda decriminalising abortion and introducing a less punitive regime for obtaining a divorce. Utilising published reports, newspaper articles, marriage equality papers and extracts from Dáil debates, this book traces the key legislative and social changes surrounding Irish marriage equality, from the establishment of the advocacy group in 2008 to the referendum on the extension of civil marriage rights to same-sex couples in Ireland in 2015. With a foreword by Ivana Bacik, a Senator and Reid Professor of Criminal Law, Criminology and Penology at Trinity College Dublin, best known for her tireless work defending human rights, this book offers a concise historical record of the momentous referendum on marriage equality.

Be a man! : males in modern society  /

samenvatting: "The revolution in gender roles and functions in the past three decades has made us acutely aware of the historical dimensions to masculine image and performance. The time is ripe for a history of men which begins to sort out the biological, psychological and cultural components in our perception of man and in man's perception of himself. Stearns examines the particular Western conception of maleness which modified the heritage of biological and prehistorical man with its own peculiar combination of cultural influences derived from Classical, Judeo-Christian and Germanic models. By the early modern period, maleness had come to be understood in terms of property, patriachal authority and physical courage. This traditional, preindustrial definition of maleness underwent decisive change and challenge in the nineteenth century with rapid industrialization and the panoply of cultural shifts which imposed new and less stable gender criteria on men. In this century, increased stress has been brought to bear on male identity and the old imperative, "Be a man!", has lost its clear meaning... Stearns sifts through the historical legacy of male roles and models in order to grasp fully the antecedents of today's conflicts and confusions."

Specificity without identity : Articulating post-gender sexuality through the 'non-binary lesbian'  / Levi CR Hord.

Sexualities, 25 (2022) 5-6 (sep), p. 615-637
bron: Sexualities jaargang: 25 (2022) 5-6 (sep), p. 615-637
samenvatting: This paper uses the paradigmatic pairing of non-binary and lesbian as identity labels to investigate changes in conceptualizations of sexual specificity as gender becomes divorced from its founding binaries. Contrary to the belief that lesbian is threatened by movement away from binary gender, this analysis postulates that it is not individual identities that are becoming problematic as gender identity becomes less binary; rather, it is the fundamental structure of identity which, for decades, has sanctioned identities built on exclusions. This cultural shift has the potential to liberate structures of desire, giving way to a model in which sexuality without gender is more redemptive than contentious.
