Fairy Tales : how we stopped being 'lesbian and gay' and became queer  / Alan McKee.

Social Semiotics, 7 (1997) 1 apr, p. 21-36
bron: Social Semiotics jaargang: 7 (1997) 1 apr, p. 21-36
samenvatting: This paper challenges recent fairy tales, simplistic and reassuring teleological narratives of moral change, which move our community from being 'lesbian and gay' to being 'queer'. Through an exploration of one particular - lesbian and gay, the textualised 'lesbian and gay community' constructed by community newspapers in Australia, the author suggests that such attempts at distinction, in proposing a linear and teleological movement from bad to good practice, in fact essentialise and dehistoricise these terms. The 'lesbian and gay' of the papers 'lesbian and gay community' proves in fact to exhibit many of the qualities which 'queer' theorists have claimed for the later term. Such a project of tracing the historical textual manifestations of 'lesbian and gay' problematicises the essentialism necessary in making statements in the form, 'lesbian and gay was ... but queer is ... '.

Sex, sexuality and gender in the Delhi metro trains : A semiotic analysis  / Anuj Gupta.

Rupkatha Journal on Interdisciplinary Studies in Humanities, 6 (2014) 1, p. 178-185
bron: Rupkatha Journal on Interdisciplinary Studies in Humanities jaargang: 6 (2014) 1 , p. 178-185
samenvatting: This paper explores the way sex, sexuality and gender are constructed in Delhi, India by using a semiotic understanding of reality whereby an individual is thought of as being subjectivized due to his being embedded in the socio-semantic text of a city full of signs which he/she interprets and constructs his identity through such a hermeneutical act. Within this socio-semantic text that the individual interprets, there are various determiners of interpretation and gender is one of them. This paper is a semiotic analysis of the text made by the collection of signs in the Delhi Metro trains. The purpose of this essay is to determine the ways in which the citizens of Delhi think of sex, sexuality and gender and analyze the ways in which these notions are reproduced on a daily basis through microcosmic texts like these signs in the Delhi metro trains.

samenvatting: From Iceta to Maroto: Gay identity in politics as a matter of journalistic interest in Spain. After years of invisibility, the media incorporated homosexuality into their agenda through a prejudiced, stigmatizing and sensationalist discourse. The representation of non-normative sexual orientations often emphasized showy and provocative elements to justify their inclusion as news. This particular discourse also looks for impacting on the emotion of the audience. This tendency that tries to transform gay identity in something strange and unusual has fueled some practices, for example, in British tabloids, which frequently show speculative reporting on the sexuality of commonly known figures, especially those coming from sports or political sphere. This research deals, through a qualitative approach, with how the Spanish press has covered two news episodes that link politics and homosexuality and which are separated by more than 15 years: the coming out of the socialist politician Miquel Iceta, the first to publicly recognize himself as gay in Spain (1999), and the wedding of the conservative leader Javier Maroto with his husband (2015). The aim of the study is to identify the main characteristics of these two coverages in some of the most important Spanish newspapers and to assess whether it is possible to detect differences between the two cases.

Visualising the politics of appearance in times of democratisation: An analysis of the 2010 Belgrade Pride Parade television coverage  / Aleksandra Krstic, Katy Parry and Giorgia Aiello.

European Journal of Cultural Studies (2017) (dec), p. 1-19
bron: European Journal of Cultural Studies (2017)(dec), p. 1-19
samenvatting: The 2010 Belgrade Pride Parade represents a critical moment in the story of Serbia's democratisation process and highlights the threat that right-wing extremism poses to democratic rights and personal freedoms. Through a focus on patterns of visibility and visuality in the coverage of different protagonists in the streets of Belgrade, we explore the ways in which distinct communities perform their affinities, their right to be seen in public spaces, and rejection of 'the other'. We conduct a visual framing analysis across four news programmes (RTS, Prva TV, TV B92 and Pink TV), emphasising the stylistic-semiotic choices which work to construct the contested spaces of the city. In shifting attention to how the news images work to create the spaces of political 'appearance' and the potentials for political agency through mediated visibility, the article explores the uneasy ambivalence of the democratisation process for authorities and the resulting marginalisation of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community in news coverage.
