Paradise Lost? Social Change and Fa'afafine in Samoa  / Johanna Schmidt.

Current Sociology, 51 (2003) 3-4 (May), p. 417-432
bron: Current Sociology jaargang: 51 (2003) 3-4 (May), p. 417-432
samenvatting: Geographically isolated in the centre of the Pacific, Samoa has only recently become fully incorporated into economic and social forms of globalization. The past few decades have seen significant shifts in the construction and expression of gender and sexuality. Among the groups most affected are the fa'afafine, biological males who express feminine gender identities. These transgendered identities were `traditionally' most often enacted through labour, but fa'afafine subjectivities currently incorporate more and more western discourses of gender and sexuality. In this article, the author examines how westernization has resulted in the social marginalization of fa'afafine, but has also allowed access to a wider range of `imagined lives' than previously available. While globalization has inevitably and irrevocably changed the local life-worlds of Samoa, and thus the enactment of fa'afafine identities, the author argues that fa'afafine continue to enact culturally unique identities that incorporate aspects of both western and Samoan gender and sexuality conceptions.

Peripheral Desires : The German Discovery of Sex  /

Robert Deam Tobin.Philadelphia, PA: University of Pennsylvania Press, 2015 - xix, 306 p.: ill.
uitgave: Philadelphia, PA: University of Pennsylvania Press, 2015 - xix, 306 p.: ill.
annotatie: Bibliogr.: p. 283-296.

samenvatting: In Peripheral Desires, Robert Deam Tobin charts the emergence, from the 1830s through the early twentieth century, of a new vocabulary and science of human sexuality in the writings of literary authors, politicians, and members of the medical establishment in German-speaking central Europe-and observes how consistently these writers, thinkers, and scientists associated the new nonnormative sexualities with places away from the German metropoles of Berlin and Vienna. In the writings of Aimee Duc and Lou Andreas-Salome, Switzerland figured as a place for women in particular to escape the sexual confines of Germany. The sexual ethnologies of Ferdinand Karsch-Haack and the popular novels of Karl May linked nonnormative sexualities with the colonies and, in particular, with German Samoa. Same-sex desire was perhaps the most centrifugal sexuality of all, as so-called Greek love migrated to numerous places and peoples: a curious connection between homosexuality and Hungarian nationalism emerged in the writings of Adalbert Stifter and Karl Maria Kerbeny; Arnold Zweig built on a long and extremely well-developed gradation of associating homosexuality with Jewishness, projecting the entire question of same-sex desire onto the physical territory of Palestine; and Thomas Mann, of course, famously associated male-male desire with the fantastically liminal city of Venice, lying between land and sea, Europe and the Orient. As Germany-and German-speaking Europe-became a fertile ground for homosexual subcultures in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, what factors helped construct the sexuality that emerged? Peripheral Desires examines how and why the political, scientific and literary culture of the region produced the modern vocabulary of sexuality.

Reconsidering Male Bisexuality: Sexual Activity Role and Sexual Attraction in Samoan Men Who Engage in Sexual Interactions With Fa'afafine  / Lanna J. Peterson ... [et al.].

Psychology of Sexual Orientation and Gender Diversity, 3 (2016) 1, p. 11-26
bron: Psychology of Sexual Orientation and Gender Diversity jaargang: 3 (2016) 1 , p. 11-26
samenvatting: In many non Western cultures, same-sex attracted males are markedly feminine in terms of their gender role presentation and are recognized as members of a "third" gender. These third gender males engage in sexual activity with masculine males who are recognized as men. The sexual orientation of these masculine men remains an open question. Using a Samoan sample (N 100), the current study employed measures of self-report and viewing time (a measure that assesses sexual interest based on the length of time individuals attend to stimuli images presented on a computer screen) to examine differences in patterns of sexual attraction among: (a) men who only engage in sexual interactions with women, (b) men who engage in sexual activity with third gender males (known locally as fa'afafine) but only receive fellatio, (c) men who both perform and receive fellatio with their fa'afafine sexual partner(s), and (d) fa'afafine, themselves. Inferential statistical analyses were used to compare groups. Our results indicate that these groups are distributed on a scale of sexual attraction ranging from primarily attracted to women to primarily attracted to men, respectively. These results suggest that male sexual orientation is a continuous trait, is tied to sexual activity role, and its expression is influenced by culture. Moreover, the present study highlights the importance of conducting quantitative, experimental research in non-Western cultures so as to garner a more comprehensive understanding of those aspects of sexuality that are universal and those that are cross-culturally variable.

samenvatting: Interdisciplinary artist Yuki Kihara presents an ensemble exhibition, Paradise Camp, from the unique perspective of Fa'afafine - "in the manner of a woman" or third gender in Samoa. Conceived eight years ago, Paradise Camp comprises a suite of twelve tableau photographs in saturated colour that upcycle paintings by Paul Gauguin; a five-part episodic "talk show" series whereby a group of Fa'afafine comment wittily on select Gauguin paintings and Kihara's personal research archive. Kihara's audacious reenactments address intersectionality between decolonisation, identity politics, and climate crisis from a staunchly Pasifika perspective, telling their story from the Pacific.
