Pinkwashing : Israel's International Strategy and Internal Agenda  / Ghadir Shafie.

Kohl: A Journal for Body and Gender Research, 1 (2015) 1 (summer), p. 82-86
bron: Kohl: A Journal for Body and Gender Research jaargang: 1 (2015) 1 (summer), p. 82-86
samenvatting: Ghadir is a Palestinian feminist who dedicates her work and activism to the cause of Palestinian queer women and to promoting a greater understanding of - and commitment to - the issue of Palestine amongst fellow activists and stakeholders. Ghadir passionately believes in the intersectionality of the struggle of Palestinian queer women. Fighting a triple oppression - as Palestinians, as women and as LGBTQI people, Palestinian queer women are at the heart of the feminist, queer and anti-colonial national liberation causes. Through her work and activism, Ghadir endeavors to make this intersection visible and to unite the feminist, queer and Palestine liberation movements in a monumental struggle for justice and freedom to all Palestinians. Ghadir is the co-director of Aswat - Palestinian Gay Women.

Deafies in drag : Role models at the intersection of queer and deaf representation  / Nynke Feenstra, Looi van Kessel.

bron:
samenvatting: In this article, Nynke Feenstra and Looi van Kessel think through the challenges of putting intersectional theory in practice by tracing a history of role models at the intersection of deaf and LGBTQ+ identifications in the Netherlands and the United States. They argue that, while the concept of intersectionality has taken great leaps in academic debates, formal institutions still sometimes struggle with the practical applications of insights that this concept offers. By looking into the history of Dutch activists such as Bea Visser and advocacy groups such as Roze Gebaar, and the current work of the deaf drag performers Deafies in Drag, Feenstra and van Kessel argue that a more practical attention to the intersection of minoritizing identifications foregrounds tensions and issues that arise from within the deaf and LGBTQ+ communities, as well as from without. The practice of drawing attention to intersecting minoritizing identifications can be found in the function of role models who identify across different marginalized communities, and thus can help work towards forms of activism that pay attention to specific issue advocacy as well as inclusivity.

XOXY : A Memoir (Intersex Woman, Mother, Activist)  /

uitgave: London [etc.]: Jessica Kingsley Publishers, 2020 - 288 p.

samenvatting: Meet Kimberly, a regular suburban housewife and mother, whose discovery later in life that she was born intersex fuelled her to become an international human rights defender and globally-recognised activist. Charting her intersex discovery and her journey to self-acceptance, this book movingly portrays how being intersex impacted Kimberly's personal and family life, as well as her career. From uncovering a secret that was intentionally kept from her, to coming out to her family and friends and fighting for intersex rights, her candid and empowering story helps breakdown barriers and misconceptions of intersex people and brings to light the trauma and harmful impact medical intervention continues to have on the intersex community.

Theorizing Kuirlombismos and Black Liberation across the Diaspora: Black Brazilian Artivists Challenge the Coloniality of Affect  / Tanya L. Saunders.

GLQ : A Journal of Lesbian and Gay Studies, 28 (2022) 4 (oct), p. 589-616
bron: GLQ : A Journal of Lesbian and Gay Studies jaargang: 28 (2022) 4 (oct), p. 589-616
samenvatting: This essay has three goals: First, to illustrate the epistemological interventions of Black Brazilian queer artivists in theories of Black liberation through naming and defining their sexual-dissident-subjectivities and the affective modes they engender, such as the feeling of solidão (solitude). Second, to contribute to efforts to decolonize the academy in the Americas more broadly, by pointing to the emergent Black queer archives and repertoires that Black queer artivists are intentionally producing outside the Brazilian academy. And third, to highlight how, why, and where Black queer theory is being produced in Brazil, to avoid crediting privileged (in this case, white mestizo) actors within the Brazilian academy for the intellectual production of Black queer theorists who generally do not have access to the transnational academic sphere.

"Ten dyke marches all over L.A.": a conversation with Judy Ornelas Sisneros  / Wanda Alarcón.

Journal of Lesbian Studies, 26 (2022) 3 (jul-sep), p. 286-302
bron: Journal of Lesbian Studies jaargang: 26 (2022) 3 (jul-sep), p. 286-302
samenvatting: "Ten dyke marches over L.A." captures highlights from an interview with the Los Angeles queer activist and photographer, Judy Ornelas Sisneros. Originally from Bakersfield, California, Sisneros grew up in a racially mixed working-class neighborhood; she made Los Angeles her permanent home in the late 1980s. Her political education began through the newspapers her family shared at the dining table. Sisneros developed an early love of photojournalism which she pursued formally in her education and in the punk practice of Do-It-Yourself. Persistent, creative, and dedicated to her subjects, Sisneros has honed her own unique aesthetics and politics in documenting music scenes, political events, communities, and social spaces that show the dynamic diversity of Los Angeles. As a co-founder of Dyke March L.A., the title refers to Sisneros's vision of the plentitude and possibility for queer L.A.

Public faces, secret lives : a queer history of the women's suffrage movement  /

Wendy L. Rouse.New York, NY: New York University Press, 2022 - vii, 240 p.: ill.

samenvatting: The women?s suffrage movement, much like many other civil rights movements, has an important and often unrecognized queer history. In Public Faces, Secret Lives Wendy L. Rouse reveals that, contrary to popular belief, the suffrage movement included a variety of individuals who represented a range of genders and sexualities. However, owing to the constant pressure to present a ?respectable? public image, suffrage leaders publicly conformed to gendered views of ideal womanhood in order to make women?s suffrage more palatable to the public. Rouse argues that queer suffragists did take meaningful action to assert their identities and legacies by challenging traditional concepts of domesticity, family, space, and death in both subtly subversive and radically transformative ways. Queer suffragists also built lasting alliances and developed innovative strategies in order to protect their most intimate relationships, ones that were ultimately crucial to the success of the suffrage movement. Public Faces, Secret Lives is the first work to truly recenter queer figures in the women?s suffrage movement, highlighting their immense contributions as well as their numerous sacrifices.

"Where Is My Tribe"? Queer Activism in the Occupy Movements  / Pablo Pérez Navarro.

Interalia : A Journal of Queer Studies (2018) 13, p. 90-101
bron: Interalia : A Journal of Queer Studies (2018) 13 , p. 90-101
samenvatting: From the Arab Spring to the Umbrella Revolution, the last cycle of citizen protests has widely shared the strategy of occupying public spaces through the settlement of protest camps. Although one might imagine a homogeneous unity amongst the protesters, these encampments have been the scenario of multiple inner conflicts in relation with different vectors of oppression. This article discusses the conflicts faced and the coalition-building developed by queer activists in different encampments, with a focus on the relation between the occupation of queer spaces and the space of the protest as a whole. The Foucauldian concept of heterotopia is used here as a guide in order to understand the ambivalences and inner tensions of the space of the protest without losing, nor idealizing, the utopian impulse of these movements.

samenvatting: This research project is focused on two, interconnected aspects: relations within activist organisations and their implementation of intersectionality. The goal of this research is to better portray activist organisations' struggles and solutions through the experiences of their members. After analysing the existing research on collective identity and intersectionality, this research aims to answer the following main question: - How can queer organisations in the Netherlands implement the idea of collective identity and intersectionality on their way to achieve shared goals? This research question falls apart into three sub-questions: - Is collective identity really necessary to achieve the goals within Dutch, queer, activist organisations? - Is it possible that shared goals can be enough to motivate people to action? - How do the organisations work on the intersectional level of experiences of their members?
