samenvatting: Haruhi Fujioka is a scholarship student at the prestigious Ouran Academy, a fictitious high school located in Bunkyo, Tokyo. Looking for a quiet place to study, Haruhi stumbles upon the Third Music Room, a place where the Ouran Academy Host Club, a group of six male students, gathers to entertain female "clients." Haruhi's short hair, slouching attire and gender-ambiguous face cause her to be mistaken by the hosts for a male student. After a brief run as such, the Hosts soon realize that she's a "natural" in entertaining girls and promote her to full-Host status. She agrees since Hosting will help her pay off her debt more quickly. The members of the club discover her true gender one by one, but they keep this fact a secret.

Passing the Test: The Transgender Self, Society and Femininity  / Allison Bischoff.

  1. genderidentiteiten
  2. transgender
samenvatting: This research explores the complex relationships between transgender women and their bodies, their intimate relationships, their identities, and the pressure to pass. The work begins by defining the term transgender, as well as discussing the history of transgender issues in the Netherlands. Several works by both Dutch and non-Dutch authors that focus on the transgender identity are reviewed and related to this study. The theories postulated by Julia Serrano, Matthew Sycamore Bernstein, Linda Nicholson and Judith Butler are critical to the analysis of personal interviews conducted by the researcher with five Dutch transgender women. Through these interviews several themes arise, including the importance of the body, womanhood and femininity, and the pressure to pass. The researcher argues that transgender women confirm their self identities through transforming their bodies, whether physiologically or superficially (i.e. clothing, mannerisms, etc.) and through conforming to the ideals of femininity.

'I Am Chelsea Manning' : Comparison of Gendered Representation of Private Manning in U.S. and International News Media  / Andrea M. Hackl, Amy B. Becker and Maureen E. Todd.

Journal of Homosexuality, 63 (2016) 4 (apr), p. 467-486
bron: Journal of Homosexuality jaargang: 63 (2016) 4 (apr), p. 467-486
samenvatting: On August 22, 2013, Bradley Manning released a statement requesting to be referred to as female. In the following days, the news media discussed whether language should shift toward a female representation. Using quantitative content analysis and qualitative contextual analysis, this study analyzed whether U.S. and international newspapers (N = 197) acknowledged Manning?s request to be referred to as 'Chelsea' in the two weeks after the statement. Results suggest that the mainstream press was hesitant in shifting toward a female representation. A comparison of international and U.S. newspapers suggests that the U.S. press lagged behind international coverage using a female depiction. Barriers and facilitators of physical activity and sport participation among young transgender adults who are medically transitioning  / Bethany Alice Jones ...[et al.].

International Journal of Transgenderism, 18 (2017) 2 (apr-jun), p. 227-238
bron: International Journal of Transgenderism jaargang: 18 (2017) 2 (apr-jun), p. 227-238
samenvatting: Transgender people (those who feel incongruence between the gender they were assigned at birth and their gender identity) engage in lower levels of physical activity compared to cisgender (non-transgender) people. Several factors have been shown to affect physical activity engagement in the cisgender population; however, the physical activity experiences of young transgender adults have not been explored. It is therefore the aim of the current study to understand what factors are associated with physical activity and sport engagement in young transgender adults who are medically transitioning. Method: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 14 young transgender adults (18-36 years) who had initiated their medical transition at a transgender health service in the United Kingdom. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis. Results: Two main themes were identified: (1) barriers and (2) facilitators to physical activity and sport. Overall, the young transgender adults were insufficiently active due to inadequate changing facilities, body dissatisfaction, fears surrounding 'passing' and not being accepted by others. At the same time, participants were motivated to engage in physical activity to increase their body satisfaction and gender congruence. However, participants felt there was a lack of safe and comfortable spaces to engage in physical activity and sport. Conclusion: Young transgender adults who are medically transitioning experience several barriers to physical activity and sport, despite being motivated to be physically active. Initiatives to facilitate young transgender adults' ability to put their motivations into practice (i.e. to be more physically active) are needed.

Passing to América : Antonio (Née María) Yta's Transgressive, Transatlantic Life in the Twilight of the Spanish Empire  /

samenvatting: In 1803 in the colonial South American city of La Plata, Doña Martina Vilvado y Balverde presented herself to church and crown officials to denounce her husband of more than four years, Don Antonio Yta, as a "woman in disguise." Forced to submit to a medical inspection that revealed a woman's body, Don Antonio confessed to having been María Yta, but continued to assert his maleness and claimed to have a functional 'member' that appeared, he said, when necessary. Passing to América is at once a historical biography and an in-depth examination of the sex/gender complex in an era before 'gender' had been divorced from 'sex.' The book presents readers with the original court docket, including Don Antonio's extended confession, in which he tells his life story, and the equally extraordinary biographical sketch offered by Felipa Ybañez of her son María, - both in English translation and the original Spanish. Thomas A. Abercrombie's analysis not only grapples with how to understand the sex/gender system within the Spanish Atlantic empire at the turn of the nineteenth century but also explores what Antonio/María and contemporaries can teach us about the complexities of the relationship between sex and gender today. Passing to América brings to light a previously obscure case of gender transgression and puts Don Antonio's life into its social and historical context in order to explore the meaning of 'trans' identity in Spain and its American colonies.

Gender affirmation and social exclusion amongst trans women of color in Australia  / Jane M. Ussher ...[et al.].

International Journal of Transgender Health, 23 (2022) 1-2 (jan-jun), p. 79-96
bron: International Journal of Transgender Health jaargang: 23 (2022) 1-2 (jan-jun), p. 79-96
samenvatting: Transgender (trans) women of color navigate the intersected identity frames of gender, race, social class and sexuality, whilst facing multiple layers of stigma, discrimination and violence during and following gender affirmation. However, little is known about the ways in which trans women of color negotiate gender affirmation, in the context of the risk of social exclusion and violence. This article discusses the experience and construction of gender transitioning and gender affirmation for trans women of color living in Australia, associated with the risk of social exclusion or violence. In-depth interviews and photovoice were conducted with 31 trans women of color, analyzed through theoretical thematic analysis informed by intersectionality theory. The following themes were identifed: 1) 'Gender affirmation: A bittersweet experience', with three subthemes: 'Self-empowerment is tempered by family rejection', 'Migration facilitates gender affirmation' and 'Gender affirmation and social support'; 2) 'Being a trans woman of color', subthemes: 'Bodily agency and passing', 'Femininity as pleasure and cultural self-expression', and 'Resisting archetypal White hetero-femininity'; 3) 'Hormones, surgical intervention and navigating the health syste'. Gender transitioning and gender affirmation involved the intersection of gender, cultural, social class and sexual identities, accomplished through personal agency and with the support of significant others. To ensure that policy and support services meet the needs of trans women of color, it is critical that the voices of such multiply-marginalized women are at the center of leadership, program and policy development.

The Queer Gypsy  / Daniel Baker.

Roma Rights : Journal of the European Roma Rights Centre
bron: Roma Rights : Journal of the European Roma Rights Centre
samenvatting: This paper summarises the dissertation submitted in completion of my MA in Gender and Ethnic Studies at the University of Greenwich, London in 2002. The research examined how "out" Gay Romanies reconcile disparate and/or conflicting identity positions within their familial and cultural milieux. In-depth interview data was analysed in the light of contemporary identity theory in order to uncover narratives that convey what it means for some to be both Gay and Romani.
