Imperialism Within the Margins : Queer Representation and the Politics of Culture in Southern Africa  /

William J. Spurlin.Basingstoke [etc.]: Palgrave Macmillan, 2006 - ix, 182 p.
uitgave: Basingstoke [etc.]: Palgrave Macmillan, 2006 - ix, 182 p.
ISBN: 9781403974136
onderwerpen:
samenvatting: Through focusing on the sexual politics that have emerged out of post-apartheid South Africa, Spurlin investigates textual and cultural representations of same-sex desire outside of the Euroamerican axes of queer culture and politics, and considers the ways in which queer cultural productions in southern Africa do not merely intersect with western queer identity politics and cultural representation but also resist them. "Imperialism within the Margins" therefore provides an engaged and much-needed critique of the long-present heterosexist biases of postcolonial studies and the western biases of academic queer theory. Table of Contents: - Broadening Postcolonial Studies, Decolonising Queer Studies: Disciplinary Transitions and Social Change in the "New" South Africa - Reclaiming Insurgent Sexualities: Migrant Labor and Same-Sex Marriages on the South African Gold Mines - Affective Bonds Between Women in Lesotho: Retheorizing Gender, Sexuality, and Lesbian Existence - Nationalism, Homophobia, and the Politics of "New" South African Nationhood - Sexual/Cultural Hybridity in the "New" South Africa: Emergent Sites of New Transnational Queer Politics - Transforming Theory/Transforming Borders: Postcolonial Queer Enquiry and/as a Politics of Decolonisation

In The Picture : A situational analysis of LGBTI health and rights in Southern Africa  / M. Ricardo ... [et al.]. ; [English] ed. by Tom Johnston.

samenvatting: In order to obtain a good understanding of the context in which LGBTIs live, including the political and social climate, the extent of the HIV epidemic and the HIV/AIDS response in their respective countries, COC Netherlands - in collaboration with its partner organisations - carried out baseline studies on the health and human-rights situation of key populations in a number of countries, each of which is considered in this report. Conducted between 2012 and 2014, those baseline studies focused on three key populations: their primary focus was on LGBTIs, but they also mapped out the situation for sex workers and injecting drug users (IDU). The baseline documents present an overview of the exact situation in terms of legal obstacles, legal protections and HIV-response policies in the countries studied, as well as the extent to which those policies include or fail to include the specific key populations mentioned above. Baseline studies were carried out in Angola (2014), Botswana (2012), Lesotho (2014), Malawi (2013), Mozambique (2014), Namibia (2014), South Africa (2013), Swaziland (2013), Zambia (2014) and Zimbabwe (2013).

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex human rights in Southern Africa: A contemporary literature review  / Talia Meer ... [et al.].

Johannesburg: DiDiRi Collective [etc.], 2017 - 73 p.

onderwerpen:
thema:
  1. rechtspositie

samenvatting: Individuals engaging in same-sex acts, individuals identifying as LGBTI and individuals who do not conform to heteronormative ideals of gender and sexuality experience structural, institutional and individual discrimination and exclusion across the world. This is no different in Southern African countries. While LGBTI individuals are heterogeneous and face very specific challenges based on their sexual orientation, gender identity, race, class, ethnicity and other factors, they share experiences of structural, institutional and individual discrimination and marginalisation based on their sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI). In most Southern African countries, same-sex activity remains criminalised, which further marginalises LGBTI individuals, and acts as an additional barrier to accessing public services and realising full civil and political rights. This contemporary literature review focuses on the state of LGBTI human rights in 10 Southern African countries: Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Zambia and Zimbabwe. The purpose of this review is to contribute towards a strong evidence base and scientific foundation for informed programming in the region.
