Sexuality at Imagined Home : Same-Sex Desires among Indonesian Migrant Domestic Workers in Hong Kong  / Francisca Yuenki Lai.

Sexualities, 21 (2018) 5-6 (sep), p. 899-913
bron: Sexualities jaargang: 21 (2018) 5-6 (sep), p. 899-913
samenvatting: This article examines the contested meaning of home in shaping the sexual subjectivities of Indonesian migrant domestic workers by investigating their imagined future home. It points to the question of how individuals negotiate their sexualities when subjected to particular gendered positions. The author suggests that a transnational perspective is needed for understanding the sexuality of migrant women, who negotiate between the same-sex pleasure they obtain in Hong Kong and the family expectations they are supposed to fulfill in Indonesia. For these migrant women, sexuality is malleable because it is a continuing process of relating gendered positions to sexualities, and relating the future to the present.

Homosexuality in Indonesia: Banality, Prohibition and Migration (The Case of Indonesian Gays)  / Wisnu Adihartono.

samenvatting: Abstract : A State and a national identity are formed on the basis of mutually unifying thoughts and beliefs through the processes of social imagination and social representations. Through these two processes, people also have rights to determine which thoughts and beliefs are acceptable and which ones are not. Thus, issues relating to homosexuality cannot be avoided. Most Indonesians consider homosexuality as a set of abnormal acts and contrary to their religions. In Indonesia, homosexuals are denied access to power and have almost no access to pursue their rights. Consequently, in order to survive, Indonesian homosexuals usually must hide their orientations, or in extreme cases, they move to other, more tolerant countries. Through face-to-face interviews with several gay Indonesians who lived in Paris, the study on which this paper reports sought to establish the reasons for the participants? migration to Paris. It also sought to establish the motives for the choice of Paris as a city of destination. I particularly focus on gays (gay masculine and/or gay feminine). This research was entirely conducted with qualitative methods. Thus, in this paper, several short stories that have been collected from the participants are recounted and analysed.

Bisexual Indonesian Men's Experiences of Islam, the Quran and Allah: A Mixed-Methods Analysis of Spiritual Resistance  / Chana Etengoff ...[et al.].

Journal of Bisexuality, 22 (2022) 1 (jan-mar), p. 116-144
bron: Journal of Bisexuality jaargang: 22 (2022) 1 (jan-mar), p. 116-144
samenvatting: Many Muslim men with same-sex sexualities experience tensions between their sexual/religious identities. However, few inquiries address how bisexual Muslim men grow and develop amidst socioreligious persecution. Therefore, the present study utilized a mixed-methods design and the Transformative Intersectional Psychology (TIP) framework to explore the spiritual resistance of 35 bisexual, Indonesian Muslim men. Participants completed online religious attitudes and experiences measures as well as open-ended questions regarding their religious/spiritual lives. Although 70% of participants reported that they felt unsupported by the Muslim community in the past year, 49% of participants described Islam in positive terms. Moreover, participants? largely constructed their religious and spiritual experiences outside of LGBT + Muslim affirming organizations due to the pervasive LGBTQ + hostility in Indonesia. The present study helps build a stronger theoretical foundation for understanding both the positive and negative aspects of religiosity and spirituality in bisexual Muslims? lives from a transformative and intersectional perspective.

Eye opener  / Norbert Splint.

Hello Gorgeous (2023) 43 (zomer), p. 40-43
bron: Hello Gorgeous (2023) 43 (zomer), p. 40-43

Migrant workers and LGBT activism: A comparative study of Filipino and Indonesian domestic workers in Hong Kong  / Francisca Yuenki Lai.

Sexualities (2024) 1-2, p. 113-135
bron: Sexualities (2024) 1-2 , p. 113-135
samenvatting: Situating LGBT activism in a gendered, Asian migratory context, this study asks why and how LGBT migrant workers are able to organize themselves and come out publicly as lesbians, bisexual women, or transgender people in Hong Kong. Which factors are enablers for this phenomenon? A comparison of two migrant groups, namely, the Filipinos and Indonesians, who reside in the same city, will shed light on both the commonalities and diversities of their understanding of LGBT rights as well as their approaches for engaging in the LGBT movement. The study examines the different immersed contexts of the two migrant groups rather than homogenizing "migrant domestic worker" as a universal description of these women. The study adopts an intersectional approach to examine how multiple subject positions, including gender, race, class, and non-citizen status, affect migrant domestic workers who have a same-sex relationship in the host city as well as their practices and activism. Besides, it also adopts an inter-Asia approach to shed light on the flows of knowledge as well as inequalities among Hong Kong, the Philippines, and Indonesia and provide insights into how LGBT activism in Asia is culturally hybrid and diasporic. Qualitative research methods, including participant observation and in-depth interviews, were conducted from 2016 to 2018. I attended LGBT parades and events and conducted in-depth interviews with three Filipinos, two Indonesians, and two Hong Kong people. I also used data from my earlier field work in 2010 to 2012.
