samenvatting: This survey, based on a similar survey executed in Barbados 2004, demonstrates that Guyanese are largely either tolerant or accepting of homosexuals, with the quantity of persons that could be described as homophobic amounting to approximately 25 % of the population. Women, younger persons and Guyanese who were not born in Gyuana tend to be more comfortable with homosexuals, while active-Evangelical Christians, Afro Guyanese and those who have been less well educated tend to be more homophobic.

samenvatting: During the month of July 2014, the International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission and United and Strong, in collaboration with Groundation Grenada, Guyana Rainbow Foundation, J-FLAG, and United Belize Advocacy Movement, conducted the first-ever LGBTI-focused media-monitoring project in the Englishspeaking region. These groups monitored the media in five countries: Belize, Grenada, Guyana, Jamaica, Saint Lucia. The results of the monitoring show that many media outlets reinforce negative stereotypes that can lead to violence against LGBTI people. Stories of importance about this community, policy issues and concerns about exclusion, or those that should depict them engaged in positive activities, were largely ignored by the media. Overall, the media coverage created an unbalanced, inaccurate and largely unflattering picture of the community.

Saamaka gays in Quilombos?  / Richard Price.

Revista de história comparada, 7 (2013) 1, p. 149-155
bron: Revista de história comparada jaargang: 7 (2013) 1 , p. 149-155
samenvatting: This brief article raises the possibility that, over the course of the twentieth century, a small number of Saamaka homosexual men may have sought and found a comfortable living environment in Brazilian quilombos. It describes a concrete case from the mid-twentieth century, with the help of information from José Luis Ruíz-Peinado Alonso, a Catalan anthropologist who worked with remanescentes de quilombos in the Brazilian Amazon. Definitive proof of this phenomenon remains lacking but the data are suggestive. It would seem that Brazilian quilombos may have served as a preferred refuge for Saamaka men who did not fit into their homophobic surroundings along the rivers of Suriname.

Attitudes Towards Homosexuals in Trinidad and Tobago and the Southern Caribbean  / Alana D.D. Griffith and Peter W. Wickham.

Sargasso (2014-2015) 1 & 2, p. 107-128
bron: Sargasso (2014-2015) 1 & 2 , p. 107-128
samenvatting: This article provides an analysis of the public's attitude towards homosexuals in the twin island Republic of Trinidad and Tobago through a survey conducted in 2013. It explores the drivers of acceptance and rejection of homosexuals as well as negative and positive attitudes. Reference is also made to two other country studies of the populations of Barbados and Guyana. The paper offers an analysis of the public?s attitude toward homosexuals in the three islands and its attitude towards key legislative issues related to homosexuals and same-sex relations. It is found that there is a dissonance between the attitudes towards homosexuals expressed by Trinbagonians and their support of discrimination against gays, their hatred of gays, and support for anti-gay laws. While 36% of the population surveyed expressed outright hatred of homosexuals, 60% supported the maintenance of laws that criminalised same sex intercourse.

The Queer Caribbean Speaks : Interviews with Writers, Artists, and Activists  /

uitgave: New York, NY: Palgrave Macmillan, 2014 - [ix], 209 p.

samenvatting: This book is born out of the near-silence surrounding the lives of queer Caribbean citizens. In most Caribbean countries homosexuality is still illegal, and gay men and lesbians from the region live within cultures and countries which sometimes do not consider them fully human, much less full citizens. These interviews gives voice to those who live and work on the front lines of the battle for the recognition of LGBT rights in the region, with the hope that their voices will bring wider awareness of, and shed light on, the problems faced by LGBT Caribbean citizens.

Envisioning Global LGBT Human Rights : (Neo)colonialism, Neoliberalism, Resistance and Hope  /

ed. by Nancy Nicol ... [et al.].London: University of London Institute of Commonwealth Studies, 2018 - xxx, 428 p.: ill.

samenvatting: Envisioning Global LGBT Human Rights: (Neo)colonialism, Neoliberalism, Resistance and Hope is an outcome of a five-year international collaboration among partners that share a common legacy of British colonial laws that criminalise same-sex intimacy and gender identity/expression. The project sought to facilitate learning from each other and to create outcomes that would advance knowledge and social justice. The project was unique, combining research and writing with participatory documentary filmmaking. This visionary politics infuses the pages of the anthology. The chapters are bursting with invaluable first hand insights from leading activists at the forefront of some of the most fiercely fought battlegrounds of contemporary sexual politics in India, the Caribbean and Africa. As well, authors from Canada, Botswana and Kenya examine key turning points in the advancement of SOGI issues at the United Nations, and provide critical insights on LGBT asylum in Canada. Authors also speak to a need to reorient and decolonise queer studies, and turn a critical gaze northwards from the Global South. It is a book for activists and academics in a range of disciplines from postcolonial and sexualities studies to filmmaking, as well as for policy-makers and practitioners committed to envisioning, and working for, a better future.
