samenvatting: Traditional understandings of families incorporate the assumption that both parents and children are heterosexual. Only quite recently have psychological research and theory examined lesbian, gay, and bisexual lives within the context of families. In Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual Identities in Families, Charlotte J. Patterson and Anthony R. D'Augelli draw together the psychological research and examine the entire multifaceted experience of such relationships. The editors bring together the most important recent scholarship and empirical research on family relationships and dynamics, and they identify directions for future research and theory in this area. The first section of the book discusses different perspectives on sexual orientation in families. It focuses on evidence relevant to genetic contributions to sexual orientation, and looks at social interactions and their development. Ethnic identity and family dynamics along with cultural influences on conceptions of sexual orientation and family lives are examined. The next section focuses on key aspects of interpersonal relationships within the families of lesbians, gay men, and bisexual individuals. The interactions between children and parents of different sexual orientations and a variety of intergenerational processes in lesbian-headed families are explored. The final section of the book focuses on community and contextual issues. It explores economic issues, antilesbian/antigay attitudes, social structures, and social policies that affect lesbian and gay family lives.

Genograms redrawn : lesbian couples define their families  / Mary A. Swainson, Fiona Tasker.

Journal of GLBT Family Studies, 1 (2005) 2, p. 3-27
bron: Journal of GLBT Family Studies jaargang: 1 (2005) 2 , p. 3-27
samenvatting: One of the challenges faced by GLBT families is defining and representing family relationships in a way that is not constrained by heterosexist notions of family. This study explores the usefulness of asking lesbian couples to depict family relationships by adapting the genogram (family tree) techniques used in family therapy. Six lesbian couples were asked to construct their own family tree and to comment on the process. Genograms were found to be useful but needed to be redrawn, for example, with tiers and circles rather than traditional symbols. Drawing and redrawing genograms highlighted the importance of acceptance and affirmation versus homophobia and heterosexism in defining family relationships for the lesbian couples interviewed. Achieving competent family practice with same-sex parents : some promising directions  / Jacky Coates, Richard Sullivan.

Journal of GLBT Family Studies, 1 (2005) 2, p. 89-113
bron: Journal of GLBT Family Studies jaargang: 1 (2005) 2 , p. 89-113
samenvatting: Due to the increasing recognition of same-sex marriage in different jurisdictions and growing numbers of parents raising children in the context of a same-sex relationship, it is becoming ever more important for family therapists to attain clinical competence in working with families headed by same-sex parents. This paper takes as its premise that good intentions and general acceptance of diversity are not sufficient in working with this population of families. Rather, clinical competence rests on experience working with lesbian and gay clients and knowledge of the impact of heterosexism on parenting in the context of same-sex relationships. Equally critical to competent family therapy practice is a theoretical framework that pulls together complementary concepts from different bodies of theory to analyze family structures and functions in the social context of heterosexism. To this end, this paper reviews family systems theory, structural social work, ecological systems theory and queer theory with an eye to culling complementary constructs relevant to working with same-sex parents. Specific aspects of family functioning such as maintenance of boundaries around and within families and role differentiation between parents are then explored using this theoretical framework. Finally, implications for the clinician working with families led by same-sex parents are reviewed. [Copies are available from: Haworth Document Delivery Center. Old Maps, New Territory : Family Therapy Theory and Gay and Lesbian Couples  / Michael C. LaSala.

Journal of GLBT Family Studies, 3 (2007) 1, p. 1-14
bron: Journal of GLBT Family Studies jaargang: 3 (2007) 1 , p. 1-14
samenvatting: Family therapy models often do not reflect the realities and desires of many gay and lesbian couples. Therapists working with this population are left to decide whether to apply these models as they are, to discard them, or to attempt to modify them as they assist their clients. Using research findings and case examples that describe the intergenerational boundaries for gay and lesbian couples as well as the nonmonogamous relationships of gay men, this paper illustrates how therapists can adapt family therapy models to suit the needs and preferences of this client population. How Depressed and Suicidal Sexual Minority Adolescents Understand the Causes of Their Distress  / Gary M. Diamond ... [et al.].

Journal of Gay & Lesbian Mental Health, 15 (2011) 2 (april-june), p. 130-151
bron: Journal of Gay & Lesbian Mental Health jaargang: 15 (2011) 2 (april-june), p. 130-151
samenvatting: This study examined how lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) adolescents reporting clinically significant depressive and suicidal symptoms understand the causes of their psychological distress. The role of the quality of the adolescent-parent relationship as a risk or protective factor was explored. Ten qualitative interviews were analyzed using the Consensual Qualitative Research method. Results showed that adolescents viewed family rejection of sexual orientation, extra-familial LGB related victimization, and non-LGB related negative family life events as the most common causes of their psychological distress. Most of the adolescents also reported experiencing support from at least one family member, and half reported experiencing significant extra-familial (e.g., peers, school counselor) support. Almost all of the adolescents reported wishing that their relationships with their parents were closer and characterized by more acceptance, as well as a willingness to participate in family therapy to improve their relationships with their parents. Clinical implications are discussed. [ Copies are available at http://www.tandf.co.uk/journals/haworth-journals.asp ]

Family Therapy with GLBT Youths : Kite in Flight Revisited  / M. L. Parker, Rachel B. Tambling, Lena L. Franklin.

Journal of GLBT Family Studies, 7 (2011) 4 (jul-sep), p. 368-387
bron: Journal of GLBT Family Studies jaargang: 7 (2011) 4 (jul-sep), p. 368-387
samenvatting: In the past decade, inquiry into sexual identity development has offered a greater understanding of the experiences reported by gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender (GLBT) youths over the life course (Cohler & Hammack, 2007). While previous critiques of sexual development literature have resulted in greater support for many GLBT adolescents, we argue that the increases in acceptance and support afforded many sexual-minority teens are overall contextually dependent. In addition, clinicians working with GLBT youths in various contexts may be ill-equipped to provide the needed resources for this population of youths and families (Burgess, 1999). The Kite in Flight (Parker, Bermudez, & Neustifter, 2008) model is a family therapy approach that has been examined for use with GLBT youths to address the need for more effective therapeutic approaches with this population. Specifically, this article will further explore contextual and environmental influences for use with the Kite in Flight family therapy approach. Included are transcripts from two case examples that illustrate the influence of contextual and environmental factors using the model.
