samenvatting: In the literature (Ehrhardt et al. 1974) the difference in gender role behaviour between CAH girls and control girls is described as tomboy behaviour. By tomboy behaviour in girls with CAH is meant: - expression of physical energy in outdoor games and sports - preference for playing with boys' toys rather than with girls and girls' toys, little interest in marriage, pregnancy, motherhood and caring for young children - a preference for casual clothes (particularly trousers) and a minimal interest in jewelry, makeup and different hairstyles - the wish to be a boy rather than a girl. The explanation of this tomboy behaviour is sought by Ehrhardt et al. in the action of the male hormone. According to these authors, prenatally the male hormone has an imprinting effect on the central nerveus system, which gives rise to tomboy behaviour. As there has been no research into the influence of psychosocial factors, particularly sickness factors and parents' doubts about the sex of the child as a result of the deviant genitalia, our research has been directed to the study of these factors. A group of girls with CAH was compared with a group of healthy girls (control girls), a group of sick girls (girls with diabetes) and a group of sisters of CAH children. Similarly, CAH boys were compared with control boys, boys with diabetes and brathers of CAH children. In order to be able to measure the gender role behaviour of CAH girls an instrument was developed - the Sophia test - 'which is based on the aspects of gender role behaviour distinguished by Erhardt et al. The Sophia test is composed of 5 parts: - pictures - assertions - questions - Osgood - drawing.

samenvatting: What kinds of lives are members of the LGBTI (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, and other gender/sexual minorities) community leading in South Korea today? Many say that it is difficult to know about the lives and hardships of LGBTI people. This study started with that question and ultimately aims at understanding the present and planning for the future. People often believe that the lives of LGBTI people are not appropriate for open discussion, and there indeed are but few legal or institutional means to talk about LGBTI lives. The outcome of this survey, which was conducted independently by civil society and which encompasses the entire LGBTI community, will help us to have an accurate picture of the LGBTI community today, to grasp the members? needs, and, ultimately, to present guidelines for the future.

A couple visits a doctor asking to 'create more space' in the woman for intercourse. A doctor finds testicular tissue in a woman with appendicitis, and decides to keep his findings quiet. These are just a few of the three hundred European case histories of people whose sex was doubted during the long nineteenth century that Geertje Mak draws upon in her remarkable new book. Doubting sex offers a refreshingly new perspective on the relation between physical sex and identity over the long nineteenth century. Rather than taking sex, sexuality, and gender identity as a starting point for discussing their mutual relations, it historicizes these very categories. Based on a wealth of previously unused source material, the book asks how sex was doubted in practice - whether by lay people, by hermaphrodites themselves, or by physicians; how this doubt was dealt with; what tacit logics directed the practices by which a person was assigned a sex, and how these logics changed over time. Mak highlights three different rationales behind practices of doubting and (re)assigning sex: inscription, body and self. Sex as inscription refers to a lifelong inscription of a person in the social body as male or female, marked by the person's appearance. This logic made way for logics in which the truth of inner anatomy and inner self were more significant. Rich in fascinating examples and clear in argument, Doubting sex will be stimulating reading for academics in related fields, and make an accessible addition to reading lists for courses on gender and sexuality studies, queer studies, social history, history of medicine, and science and technology studies.
