samenvatting: When Goethe christened the 1700's "the Century of Winckelmann" and Kant dubbed it "the Century of Frederick the Great," they invoked two notorious figures in gay history. This collection of twelve essays reclaims "the Age of Goethe"? To call upon a literary designation of roughly the same period - as a time when same-sex erotic attraction suffused artistic production from Winckelmann's art treatises and Goethe's plays to Friedrich Schlegel's self-reflexive novel Lucinde and Kleist's letters. This volume employs historical, biographical, and textual evidence to paint a cohesive picture of the incontrovertibly sexual nature of male-male and female-female relationships in late-eighteenth- and early-nineteenth-century Germany. The literature of this era bequeathed to us the cultural inventions of Romantic love, classical femininity, the marriage partnership, and the aesthetics of beauty - all, as this volume demonstrates, via and despite the ever-resurgent erotic desire for one's own sex. In the process, it offers radically new readings of canonical authors - including Wieland, Lenz, Goethe, Friedrich Schlegel, and Kleist - in light of the eroticized same-sex relations in their works.

Sexing the body : gender politics and the construction of sexuality  /

samenvatting: Why do some people prefer heterosexual love while others fancy the same sex? Is sexual identity biologically determined or a product of convention? In this brilliant and provocative book, the acclaimed author of Myths of Gender argues that even the most fundamental knowledge about sex is shaped by the culture in which scientific knowledge is produced. Drawing on astonishing real-life cases and a probing analysis of centuries of scientific research, Fausto-Sterling demonstrates how scientists have historically politicized the body. In lively and impassioned prose, she breaks down three key dualisms - sex/gender, nature/nurture, and real/constructed - and asserts that individuals born as mixtures of male and female exist, and as such, should not be forced to compromise their differences to fit a flawed societal definition of normality.

Genders, transgenders and sexualities in Japan  /

edited by Mark McLelland and Romit Dasgupta.London [etc.]: Routledge, 2005 - xi, 218 p.
uitgave: London [etc.]: Routledge, 2005 - xi, 218 p.
onderwerpen:
samenvatting: Based on Japanese language materials and fieldwork, the authors examine how various noncomformist individuals have questioned received notions about sex and gender. From young women opposed to marriage, to heterosexual men who wish to be more involved in family life, the essays investigate the variety and complexity of Japanese people's experiences relating to traditional gender roles. In addition, the personal histories of feminist women, gay men, lesbians and transgender individuals are considered as these groups increasingly work together to challenge what it means to be a responsible citizen of modern Japan.

So, Where Is Queer? : A Critical Geography of Queer Exhibitions in Australia  / Andrew Gorman-Murray.

Museums and Social Issues, 3 (2008) 1 (Spring), p. 67-80
bron: Museums and Social Issues jaargang: 3 (2008) 1 (Spring), p. 67-80
samenvatting: This paper interrogates the geography of queer exhibitions in museums and galleries in Australia. The analysis draws on data from Museums Australia's database of queer exhibitions (1982-2005), which are cross-tabulated with geographical variables such as location, scale and state/territory population. The findings show an uneven geographical distribution of exhibitions, how geography also frames the themes of queer exhibitions, and an imbalanced geography, in which regional histories are few, national and state scale histories are prevalent, and minimal exhibitions occur outside metropolitan areas. This is problematic because queer identities, communities and histories vary across scales and between places. Appreciation of geography is thus useful for developing policies and practices that ensure the diversity of queer communities and histories is represented and communicated in exhibitions.

Social Work Faculty and GLBT Diversity Content : Findings from a National Sample of Social Work Faculty  / Benjamin May.

Journal of Gay and Lesbian Social Services, 22 (2010) 3 (jul-sep), p. 337-353
bron: Journal of Gay and Lesbian Social Services jaargang: 22 (2010) 3 (jul-sep), p. 337-353
samenvatting: Multicultural diverse groups are defined as a group of individuals possessing shared life experiences peculiar to that group, or possessing unique social status, rules, or languages (Gilson & DePoy, 2001). The Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) has mandated teaching gay and lesbian multicultural content since 1992 (CSWE, 1992). Approximately 326 regionally stratified national social work instructors were surveyed during January and February 2006. An exploratory survey was constructed to measure teaching the two constructs of knowledge and attitudes of multicultural competency as adapted from Crisp and DiNitto (2004). This descriptive study measures opinions of social work (SW) faculty/instructors' knowledge and values relating to teaching nine identified multicultural diverse groups when compared to teaching gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgendered (GLBT) content. This study uses a stratified random sample and attempts to measure how well instructors are teaching multicultural content within 10 identified groups, and offers comparisons between teaching GLBT with other content areas. Transgender Transitions : Sex/Gender Binaries in the Digital Age  / Kay Siebler.

Journal of Gay & Lesbian Mental Health, 16 (2012) 1 (jan-mar), p. 74-99
bron: Journal of Gay & Lesbian Mental Health jaargang: 16 (2012) 1 (jan-mar), p. 74-99
samenvatting: Contemporary representations of transgendered people often reinforce rigid gender binaries of masculinity and femininity, leading transgendered individuals to feel they must seek out hormones or surgery to "correctly align" their bodies with their gender. Cultural texts (e.g., films, television, Internet, digital texts) reinforce this "pre-op or post-op" ideology for trans identity. The pre-op or post-op MTF or FTM binary mandates an alignment with the heterosexual gender system (feminine female or masculine male). In this article, the author focuses on trans identities and how representations codify the need or desire for surgery and hormones and examines the paradoxical reification of gender and sexual stereotypes (particularly dichotomization) by electronic media for transgender consumers of these media at the same time that these same sources provide an abundance of information for those who would otherwise not be made aware of the resources available to them. The competition between marketing of products and services for transgender individuals and provision of otherwise nonprofitable information for the same individuals ranging from normalizing, informing of sources of help and health information is examined as well as the use of the Internet as a medium for transitioning individuals to share their experiences. This article argues that instead of a culture of hormones and surgery, teachers, medical professionals, and counselors should embrace and educate towards acceptance of trans identities and bodies that does not rely on the mandate of hormones or surgeries. Finally, the impact of the dissemination of information in the uncontrolled environment of the Internet illustrates the impact of culture on media and vice versa.
