Achieving an AIDS-Free generation for Gay men and other MSM in Southern Africa  / Owen Ryan ... [et al.].

onderwerpen:
thema:

  2. homoseksualiteit
samenvatting: The HIV epidemic among gay men and other men who have sex with men (MSM) in Southern Africa is expanding. Prevention, treatment, and care programs funded to reverse the epidemic often neglect the MSM population. Stigma and discrimination against MSM flourish with impunity in countries that receive significant donor funding for HIV. National planning documents and donor funding agreements mention MSM, but little programming actually exists. Epidemiological surveillance that would help inform programs serving MSM lags far behind strategic information collected on other populations. Little to no attention is paid to the needs of transgender people. This is the current state of HIV among gay men, other MSM, and transgender individuals (GMT). While the global conversation focuses on novel approaches to HIV treatment and prevention, GMT struggle to obtain the most basic health services. They are isolated, criminalized, blackmailed, and beaten. Despite this, GMT communities in Southern Africa have shown great resilience and determination. In each country studied, numerous community-led programs supported by both large and small donors are making substantial inroads against pervasive stigma and discrimination. While the global conversation focuses on novel approaches to HIV treatment and prevention, GMT struggle to obtain the most basic health services. These are the findings of the second report in this series: Achieving an AIDS-Free Generation for Gay Men and Other MSM. Focused specifically on six countries in Southern Africa (Botswana, Malawi, Namibia, Swaziland, Zambia, and Zimbabwe), this report describes the financing and implementation of programs for GMT in a region at the heart of the HIV epidemic through a combination of desk research and in-country consultations conducted by civil society advocates with implementers, policy makers, academics, and people living with HIV. These six countries have made significant progress in reducing the number of new HIV infections

samenvatting: Factors such as stigma, discrimination, violence, exclusion from national HIV health surveillance, gaps in the knowledge and attitudes of health-care workers, and the criminalisation of same-sex acts adversely affect the access to and uptake of health-care services by LGBTIs. In carrying out the needs assessments, this publication focuses on identifying those factors that restrict the access and uptake of health services amongst specific target LGBTI groups within each Southern African country.

In The Picture : A situational analysis of LGBTI health and rights in Southern Africa  / M. Ricardo ... [et al.]. ; [English] ed. by Tom Johnston.

samenvatting: In order to obtain a good understanding of the context in which LGBTIs live, including the political and social climate, the extent of the HIV epidemic and the HIV/AIDS response in their respective countries, COC Netherlands - in collaboration with its partner organisations - carried out baseline studies on the health and human-rights situation of key populations in a number of countries, each of which is considered in this report. Conducted between 2012 and 2014, those baseline studies focused on three key populations: their primary focus was on LGBTIs, but they also mapped out the situation for sex workers and injecting drug users (IDU). The baseline documents present an overview of the exact situation in terms of legal obstacles, legal protections and HIV-response policies in the countries studied, as well as the extent to which those policies include or fail to include the specific key populations mentioned above. Baseline studies were carried out in Angola (2014), Botswana (2012), Lesotho (2014), Malawi (2013), Mozambique (2014), Namibia (2014), South Africa (2013), Swaziland (2013), Zambia (2014) and Zimbabwe (2013).

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex human rights in Southern Africa: A contemporary literature review  / Talia Meer ... [et al.].

samenvatting: Individuals engaging in same-sex acts, individuals identifying as LGBTI and individuals who do not conform to heteronormative ideals of gender and sexuality experience structural, institutional and individual discrimination and exclusion across the world. This is no different in Southern African countries. While LGBTI individuals are heterogeneous and face very specific challenges based on their sexual orientation, gender identity, race, class, ethnicity and other factors, they share experiences of structural, institutional and individual discrimination and marginalisation based on their sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI). In most Southern African countries, same-sex activity remains criminalised, which further marginalises LGBTI individuals, and acts as an additional barrier to accessing public services and realising full civil and political rights. This contemporary literature review focuses on the state of LGBTI human rights in 10 Southern African countries: Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Zambia and Zimbabwe. The purpose of this review is to contribute towards a strong evidence base and scientific foundation for informed programming in the region.

samenvatting: During 2016 and 2017, a series of studies were commissioned by M&C Saatchi World Services (M&CS WS) to understand how to reduce stigma and discrimination as a key barrier to service access through the development and dissemination of messages co-created with Key Population (KP) Networks to shift attitudes and beliefs across key segments of public. The overall study comprised five components: 1) A literature review; 2) A cultural analysis; 3) Hypothesis Testing; 4) Co-creation; 5) Stimulus review. Components 3-5 involved qualitative research in all eight countries. This took the form of a series of participatory workshops with youth, men, women and stakeholders, and was complemented by interviews with stakeholders, LGBT and Sex Workers (SW).

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Intersex (LGBTI) Human Rights in Southern Africa : A Contemporary Literature Review  / Gemma Oberth.

samenvatting: Same-sex acts remain outlawed in more than two-thirds of African countries and evidence suggests that Africans are among the least accepting of homosexuality in the world. As such, African people who do not fit into normative roles of identity and sexuality are rendered invisible and unintelligible to policy makers, health workers and communities. In recent years, there is a context of increasing moral political salience of LGBTI in the region, as well as an unprecedented increase in the visibility of LGBTI people and organizations. This literature review focuses on the state of LGBTI human rights in 10 Southern African countries: Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Zambia and Zimbabwe. The purpose of this review is to contribute towards a strong evidence base and scientific foundation for informed programming in the region.
