Evolution's rainbow : diversity, gender, and sexuality in nature and people  /

Joan Roughgarden.Berkeley, CA [etc.]: University of California Press, 2004 - 474 p.
uitgave: Berkeley, CA [etc.]: University of California Press, 2004 - 474 p.
ISBN: 0520240731
onderwerpen:
samenvatting: In this innovative celebration of diversity and affirmation of individuality in animals and humans, Joan Roughgarden challenges accepted wisdom about gender identity and sexual orientation. A distinguished evolutionary biologist, Roughgarden takes on the medical establishment, the Bible, social science--and even Darwin himself. She leads the reader through a fascinating discussion of diversity in gender and sexuality among fish, reptiles, amphibians, birds, and mammals, including primates. Evolution's Rainbow explains how this diversity develops from the action of genes and hormones and how people come to differ from each other in all aspects of body and behavior. Roughgarden reconstructs primary science in light of feminist, gay, and transgender criticism and redefines our understanding of sex, gender, and sexuality. Witty, playful, and daring, this book will revolutionize our understanding of sexuality. Use of Culture-Centered Counseling Theory with Ethnically Diverse LGBT Clients  / Richmond Wynn, Cirecie West-Olatunji.

Journal of LGBT Issues in Counseling, 3 (2009) 3/4 (july-dec), p. 198-214
bron: Journal of LGBT Issues in Counseling jaargang: 3 (2009) 3/4 (july-dec), p. 198-214
samenvatting: The intersection of ethnocultural and sexual orientation identities presents unique challenges that mandate cultural competence in assessing and intervening with ethnically diverse lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people. Effective counseling with this population requires an understanding of non-Eurocentric, nonheterosexual worldviews as well as an awareness of the sociopolitical realities of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender life. Culture-centered counseling theory provides an effective framework for addressing the needs of ethnically diverse lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender clients. A review of the literature on counseling ethnically diverse lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people is provided along with case illustrations to illuminate the use of culture-centered counseling theory with this population. Recommendations focus on counselor training to increase ethnocultural knowledge and clinical competence and to reduce personal bias. Queer Theory as Pedagogy in Counselor Education : A Framework for Diversity Training  / Dennis A. Frank, Edward P. Cannon.

Journal of LGBT Issues in Counseling, 4 (2010) 1 (jan-mar), p. 18-31
bron: Journal of LGBT Issues in Counseling jaargang: 4 (2010) 1 (jan-mar), p. 18-31
samenvatting: There is an ongoing and pernicious debate within the field of counselor education surrounding the question of whether lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender issues should be included under the umbrella of multiculturalism. Some argue that lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender concerns do not fit within the traditional framework of multicultural counseling, while others assert that they do. A consequence of this debate is that many graduate-level counselors are earning degrees without having sufficient levels of self-awareness and knowledge regarding lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender communities. The authors propose queer theory as a unifying framework for diversity training within counselor education programs. [ Copies are available at http://www.tandf.co.uk/journals/haworth-journals.asp ]

Queering the Discourse of Diversity  / Liz Morrish, Kathleen O'Mara.

Journal of Homosexuality, 58 (2011) 6/7 (july-aug), p. 974-991
bron: Journal of Homosexuality jaargang: 58 (2011) 6/7 (july-aug), p. 974-991
samenvatting: In this article, we use corpus linguistic methods to examine why lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) subjects are poorly recognized within diversity statements of U.K. and U.S. research universities. While universities position diversity as a marketable signifier, we argue that queerness is rendered invisible, lest its manifestation bring universities into disrepute. "Sexual orientation" appears as a "private" or "lifestyle" choice, - and universities do not see it as part of their mission to enable students or employees to realize difference. We wish to propose that the language used in diversity statements should acknowledge notions of real inclusion and empowerment of those queers who work within them.
