Religions et homophobie au Burundi

thema:

  2. homoseksualiteit

Forbidden : Institutionalizing Discrimination Against Gays and Lesbians in Burundi.

uitgave: New York, NY : Human Rights Watch [HRW], 2009 - 19 bl.: ill.

thema:

  2. homoseksualiteit
samenvatting: On April 22, 2009, the president of Burundi, Pierre Nkurunziza, signed into law a new criminal code that contains a provision making sexual relations between people of the same sex illegal for the first time in the country's history. From November 2008, when the National Assembly first passed the discriminatory law, through May 2009, shortly after the criminal code was promulgated, Human Rights Watch carried out in-depth interviews with 16 members of Burundi's LGBT community, all of them young people between 17 and 37. We spoke to them about their childhoods, about when and how they first realized they were gay or lesbian, and about how this identity affected their lives. They told us heartbreaking stories of being beaten by parents, chased out of their family homes, threatened by police officers, silenced in school, and subjected to sexual violence. The abuses and discrimination they endured, for which they felt they had no protection from the state, made them second-class citizens in Burundi long before the passage of article 567. Human Rights Watch teamed up with photographer Martina Bacigalupo to create portraits of ten of these young people, many of whom feel that their very identities have been rendered criminal by Burundi's new law. In these pages, they are allowed to speak for themselves.

UHAI EASHRI Report on the Human Rights Status of LGBTI Persons in East Africa 2010-2013  / Milika Wahu, Happy Mwende Kinyili and Andiah Kisia.

  2. lhbt
samenvatting: This is a report of a baseline survey conducted during the months of October 2012 to February 2013. Detailed questionnaires were distributed to LGBTI organisations in five East African states: Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda. Respondents were drawn from the LGBTI and human rights communities. Drawing on information provided by the respondents, this report summarises the current human rights situation of LGBTI people in East Africa and gauges how the terrain has changed since the 2010 report. In addition to providing a snapshot of the current situation for each group, it also identifies key trends in the region on issues affecting the LGBTI community. Using a qualitative analysis approach on key indicators, the report allows LGBTI people from one country to compare their own status with those of others.

  2. intersekse
  3. transgender
samenvatting: A qualitative study whose focus is on the lived realities and experiences of Intersex, Transgender and Gender Non-Conforming (ITGNC) persons from Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Burundi and Rwanda. This study explores the ways in which the lack of distinction between sex and gender identity manifests as associated to perceived gender roles vis-á-vis non-conforming gender identities. In exploring the realities of ITGNC East Africans, this study interrogates five broad thematic issues namely; legal and policy environments, Health, Public discourse, lived realities and movement building in those five countries. The report identifies a common trend in all the study countries in which it was difficult to identify a visible intersex community. Data was collected through literature reviews, interviews and focus group discussions.
