Beliefs and attitudes of middle aged lesbians about hysterectomy  / Emily Lees, Andrea J. Shelton, Janet Y. Groff.

Journal of the Gay and Lesbian Medical Association, 5 (2001) 1 (Mar), p. 3-10
bron: Journal of the Gay and Lesbian Medical Association jaargang: 5 (2001) 1 (Mar), p. 3-10
samenvatting: Objective: The aim of this study was to identify the beliefs and attitudes of lesbians aged 30-65 years regarding hysterectomy. Design: This qualitative study comprised 12 lesbians in three focus groups, utilizing a semistructured guided discussion technique based on qualitative application of Multiattribute Utility Theory. Participants were chosen to represent various stages of decision making, and women who had undergone a hysterectomy were excluded from the study. Setting: All sessions were conducted in a Houston health clinic serving the lesbian community. Measurements: Transcripts were analyzed using Nonnumerical Unstructured Data Indexing Searching and Theorizing (NUD*IST). Results: Major categories, comprising multiple themes, were perceived outcomes of hysterectomy, help-seeking, and experiences with the physician or with the medical establishment. The lesbians in the study revealed both positive and negative outcomes of hysterectomy on sexuality. Loss associated with hysterectomy was perceived as physical, emotional, and ontological. Partner support emerged as a salient outcome. There were varying attitudes toward the use of hormone replacement following hysterectomy. For the lesbians, being in charge of decisions concerning their bodies was crucial, and they would seek information from a number of sources, including two or more physicians, before making a decision regarding hysterectomy. Although the women reported negative experiences with physicians, these experiences were not related to the physician's gender or sexual orientation. Conclusion: While being sensitive to the needs of lesbian patients, physicians also must keep in mind that hysterectomy is an individual decision.

Norman Haire and the Study of Sex  /

samenvatting: A star debater at school, Norman Haire had always wanted to be an actor. Forced to study medicine, he followed his other passion: saving the world from sexual misery. When he arrived in London in 1919 he was a poor Jewish outsider from Australia. By 1930 he had a flourishing gynaecology practice in Harley Street, a chauffeur-driven Rolls Royce and a country house. His parties were attended by the medical, intellectual and cultural elite. As a prominent sexologist and a campaigner for birth control, Haire took a leading role in the world's first international conference on birth control in 1922 and organised, with Dora Russell, the World League for Sexual Reform's highly successful 1929 Congress in London. He lectured in America, Germany, France and Spain, and wrote and edited many accessible books on sex education. In 1940 Haire returned to Australia where he attracted a loyal following, but was also hounded by the security service. The ABC Board was censured in parliament for choosing him as the key speaker in a population debate, and his weekly advice column in the magazine Woman was strongly opposed by the Catholic Church. Peter Coleman called Haire 'one of Australia's most famous freethinkers and sex reformers'. This biography pays a tribute to this tenacious, humane, witty, innovative and brave man's contribution to birth control, sexology and human rights history.

Black on Both Sides : A Racial History of Trans Identity  /

samenvatting: The story of Christine Jorgensen, Americas first prominent transsexual, famously narrated trans embodiment in the postwar era. Her celebrity, however, has obscured other mid-century trans narratives-ones lived by African Americans such as Lucy Hicks Anderson and James McHarris. Their erasure from trans history masks the profound ways race has figured prominently in the construction and representation of transgender subjects. In Black on Both Sides, C. Riley Snorton identifies multiple intersections between blackness and transness from the mid-nineteenth century to present-day anti-black and anti-trans legislation and violence. Drawing on a deep and varied archive of materials-early sexological texts, fugitive slave narratives, Afro-modernist literature, sensationalist journalism, Hollywood films-Snorton attends to how slavery and the production of racialized gender provided the foundations for an understanding of gender as mutable. In tracing the twinned genealogies of blackness and transness, Snorton follows multiple trajectories, from the medical experiments conducted on enslaved black women by J. Marion Sims, the father of American gynecology, to the negation of blackness that makes transnormativity possible. Revealing instances of personal sovereignty among blacks living in the antebellum North that were mapped in terms of cross dressingand canonical black literary works that express black mens access to the female within, Black on Both Sides concludes with a reading of the fate of Phillip DeVine, who was murdered alongside Brandon Teena in 1993, a fact omitted from the film Boys Dont Cry out of narrative convenience. Reconstructing these theoretical and historical trajectories furthers our imaginative capacities to conceive more livable black and trans worlds.

"None of my providers have the slightest clue what to do with me" : Transmasculine individuals' experiences with gynecological healthcare providers  / Lex Pulice-Farrow, Kirsten A. Gonzalez & Louis Lindley.

International Journal of Transgender Health, 22 (2021) 4 oct-dec), p. 381-393
bron: International Journal of Transgender Health jaargang: 22 (2021) 4 oct-dec), p. 381-393
samenvatting: Transgender individuals experience barriers to accessing healthcare including financial difficulties, lack of insurance, and discrimination and victimization by medical providers. Transmasculine patients face unique challenges and are more at risk for reproductive pathology resulting from a lack of regular gynecological care. Presently, a dearth of research exists on the needs of transmasculine patients in gynecological healthcare settings. While the literature on experiences of transmasculine individuals has focused on physical health and risk factors for this population, this study focuses on the information that transmasculine individuals want their gynecologists to know when working with trans patients. The aim of the present study was to explore the lived experiences of transmasculine individuals in order to understand what they feel their medical providers need to know about their experiences seeking gynecological care. Participants included 167 adults who identified as masculine of center or trans men ranging in age from 18 - 56 (M = 27.99, SD = 6.06). Participants completed an online survey and responded to open-ended questions about their gynecological healthcare experiences. Qualitative responses were analyzed via thematic analysis. Results revealed four information-salient themes, including: 1) Patient comfort levels; 2) Language; 3) Provider assumptions; and 4) Provider knowledge. Conclusions: Findings suggest that gynecologists are key in both exacerbating barriers and creating more affirming spaces for transmasculine patients. Discussion of the results focuses on the ways that providers can improve the gynecologic healthcare experiences of their transmasculine patients.
