Since its inception the 2 Spirits program has continued to provide direct one-on-one support advocacy and referral for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people living with HIV. Sistergirls/Brotherboys : The Status of Indigenous Transgender Australians  / Stephen Craig Kerry.

International Journal of Transgenderism, 15 (2014) 3-4 (jul-dec), p. 173-186
bron: International Journal of Transgenderism jaargang: 15 (2014) 3-4 (jul-dec), p. 173-186
samenvatting: This article conducts a discourse analysis of 6 research projects and 6 conferences/forums between 1994 and 2012. These research projects, conferences, and forums pertain to the lived experiences of indigenous and non-indigenous transgender Australians. This article argues that non-indigenous transgender Australians experience issues related to economic instability, social exclusion, illness, and abuse and that indigenous transgender Australians face issues pertaining to HIV/AIDS, identity, alcohol and substance abuse, physical and sexual abuse, and community engagement. While these issues appear to be broadly similar, this research suggests that indigenous transgender Australians experience additional problems of racism within wider Australian communities (including queer communities) and transphobia within traditional communities. These additional problems draw attention to complex matrices of discrimination and 'difference' that intersect cultural traditions, personal and social identity, and colonization. As a means of addressing issues of racism and social exclusion, indigenous transgender Australians have coalesced around terms unique to their communities, such as 'sistergirl' and 'brotherboy. Strengthening community capacity to maintain low levels of HIV among Aboriginal gay men and other men who have sex with men (MSM), sistergirls and brotherboys in South Australia  / Wills Logue.

HIV Australia, 13 (2015) 3 (dec), p. 41-43
bron: HIV Australia jaargang: 13 (2015) 3 (dec), p. 41-43
samenvatting: Indigenous people globally remain at higher risk of HIV than non-Indigenous people. In Australia, gay and other men who have sex with men are disproportionately affected by HIV, and, as a result, HIV transmission among this population has been well researched; however, there is little known about HIV transmission among homosexually active Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander (hereafter referred to as Aboriginal) men. As part of the community consultation process, Gay Men's Health South Australia (GMHSA) has worked with a reference group of community members consisting of gay men, MSM, sistergirls, brotherboys and Aboriginal health workers to develop a survey using the online platform, Survey Monkey. The survey was open for gay, MSM, sistergirls and brotherboys community responses from 15 June-26 July 2015.

Transgender people in Australia's Northern Territory  / Stephen Craig Kerry.

International Journal of Transgenderism, 18 (2017) 2 (apr-jun), p. 129-139
bron: International Journal of Transgenderism jaargang: 18 (2017) 2 (apr-jun), p. 129-139
samenvatting: While research has provided a significant picture of the lived experiences of transgender and sex/gender diverse (TSGD) Australians, it remains incomplete because population samples rarely include TSGD people from Australia's Northern Territory. The Northern Territory is twice the size of France but is populated by only 210,000 people. The territory's environmental and demographic features make it very distinct from Australia's other six states and mainland territory. Most notably, it possesses a "frontier" mentality and is considered to be one of Australia's most homophobic states and territories. This paper publishes the results of an online survey conducted as part of an ongoing research project into the health needs of TSGD individuals, such as availability of medical and support services that specialize in, and are "friendly" to, TSGD people, especially in remote areas of the territory, colloquially referred to as out bush.

Crossing the line: Lived experience of sexual violence among trans women of colour from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds in Australia Key findings and future directions  / Jane M. Ussher ... [et al.].

  2. transgender
samenvatting: International research indicates trans women are at higher risk of sexual violence than cisgender women. In Australia, a recent survey of trans and gender diverse people that asked participants "Have you ever been forced or frightened into doing something sexually that you did not want to do?" reported that 53.2 percent had experienced sexual violence compared to 13.3 percent of the broader Australian population. Trans women of colour face discrimination and violence on the basis of the intersection of their gender and racial identities and, for some, their sexual identities as queer women. However, there is an absence of Australian research investigating the experiences of sexual violence among trans women of colour. The experiences and needs of trans women in relation to sexual violence remain poorly understood by many healthcare providers, legislators, police and policymakers, with the experiences and needs of trans women of colour from CALD backgrounds being the least understood. The absence of culturally competent information and knowledge about transgender experience, accompanied by misinformation, can lead to stigma, prejudice and discrimination, resulting in unmet needs for trans women. This can have serious consequences for trans women?s physical and psychological wellbeing. Trans women of colour from a CALD background, as well as women who identify as lesbian, bisexual or queer, may experience additional prejudice and discrimination, due to the intersection of gender, sexuality, race and religion. The research uses women of colour to refer to the ethnic identities of the trans women interviewed as it was preferred by participants. The term CALD is used to describe culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, and to distinguish between white, Anglo-Australians and culturally and linguistically diverse Australians.

samenvatting: This Human Rights Risk Assessment has identified the salient human rights risks, which the AHRC and NZHRC recommend that FIFA should take into consideration in preparation for the FWWC2023. FIFA's human rights policy acknowledges the potential adverse impacts FIFA tournaments can have on the human rights of people belonging to specific groups, such as indigenous peoples, women, national, ethnic, religious and linguistic minorities, children, disabled people, migrant workers and their families, human rights defenders, and people with a diverse sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, or sex characteristics (LGBTQI+). Furthermore, it identifies the following 'salient human rights risks' related to its operations: labour and employment rights, land acquisition and housing rights, discrimination, security, and players' rights.
