In chapters by lesbians from Australia, Canada, the UK and the US, this remarkable degree of lesbian presence across the academy is subjected to a rigorous critique by the contributors to this volume who analyze issues such as the notion of specifically lesbian knowledge in various academic disciplines, the impact of lesbian feminism and of queer on the emergence of lesbians within higher education and the problematic of incorporating lesbian studies within the academy. From the downright pessimistic to the seriously celebratory, contributors interrogate the effects lesbians as activists, teachers and researchers have had, and continue to have, on changing disciplines and the academy.

samenvatting: This article seeks to chart a course through the contested areas of gender and sexual orientation in hopes of establishing a theoretical framework and an agenda for much needed future research. In building this article, the author draws from two research traditions, particularly in the areas of history and law. Her stance is that of a critical policy scholar, that is, drawing on neo-Marxist theory generally and Queer Legal Theory specifically. Public schools are governmental entities ruled by laws, regulations, and policies. The people who teach, lead, study, play, and otherwise live within a public school_s walls must conform to these dictates or face various legal sanctions including expulsion and job termination. These legal mandates are established through political processes that include court decisions at the state and federal levels. Therefore, legal theories can help analyze and explicate the basic structures that shape daily educational practices. In the areas of gender, sexual orientation, and a possible new politics of education, Queer Legal Theory can be particularly insightful.

samenvatting: Article discusses the development of a surgical approach to treating intersex infants and others with genital anomalies that began in the late 1950s and 1960s and became standard in the 1970s. Although professional literature has recently questioned the surgical approach to the treatment of infants, controversy surrounding treatment persists and the medical community has divided. How surgical treatment including sex reassignment surgery for intersex infants became a routine recommendation of practitioners and how parents were persuaded to consent to such radical surgeries on their infants provides a cautionary tale that is relevant both for medicine and law.

Op pagina 32: Ivi Kussmail (1999): identificeet zich als queer, studeert Filosofie aan de Universiteit van Groningen en is betrokken bij de Groningen Feminist Network (GFN) Op pagina 50-51: Titia van der Tuuk: Titia Klasina Elizabeth van der Tuuk werd in 1854 geboren in 't Zandt en groeide op in Nieuwolda. Ze ontpopte zich als strijdbaar feministe en woonde samen met haar vriendin Rose Roosegaarde Bisschop. Op pagina 246-247 : Johanna Jacoba 'Koos' Schregardus (1897-1976) : woonde de eerste jaren van haar leven aan de Westerkade 19 in Groningen. Haar buurmeisje was Tine van Klooster (1894-1945) die destijds op nummer 17 woonde. In 1925 verhuisde Koos naar Amsterdam waar ze samen ging wonen met haar voormalige buurmeisje Tine. Daar richtte het stel Uitgeverij De Branding op. En later de uitgeverij De Spieghel.

samenvatting: Trotz endgültiger Streichung des § 175 StGB sowie Einführung des Gesetzes über die Eingetragene Lebenspartnerschaft und des Allgemeinen Gleichbehandlungsgesetzes ist die gesellschaftliche Akzeptanz gegenüber Homosexuellen in Deutschland keineswegs gefestigt. Dies zeigt sich einerseits in homophoben Äußerungen, zum Beispiel in Fußballstadien oder bestimmten Musikszenen, aber andererseits auch darin, dass der bloße Vorhalt der Homosexualität noch heute von vielen als etwas Anrüchiges verstanden wird. Zwar hat die gesellschaftliche Moralanschauung in den letzten Jahrzehnten eine enorme Entwicklung erfahren, allerdings gibt es noch immer Gesellschaftsbereiche, in denen Homosexualität als unmoralisch bewertet wird. Diese Arbeit untersucht den strafrechtlichen Umgang mit homophoben Äußerungen und Äußerungen in Bezug auf Homosexualität. Im Mittelpunkt der Betrachtung stehen die Straftatbestände der Beleidigung und der Volksverhetzung. Zudem werden auch die wenigen Urteile, die es bislang zu dieser Thematik gibt, näher betrachtet.
