'In this house we believe in fairness and kindness': Post-liberation politics in Australia's same-sex marriage postal survey  / Amy Thomas, Hannah McCann, Geraldine Fela.

Sexualities, 23 (2020) 4 (jun), p. 475-496
bron: Sexualities jaargang: 23 (2020) 4 (jun), p. 475-496
samenvatting: In December 2017, Australia legalized same-sex marriage (SSM), following a 13-year ban and a drawn-out postal survey on marriage equality that saw campaigners mobilize for a 'Yes' vote on a non-binding poll. Through a discourse analysis of the Yes and No campaigns' television and online video advertisements, we demonstrate how the Yes campaign was symptomatic of what we call a 'post-liberation' approach that saw SSM as the last major hurdle for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex and Queer (LGBTIQ) politics. While the No campaign linked SSM to gender fluidity, transgender identity, and sex education programmes, in contrast the Yes campaign limited itself to narratives around love and marriage. In not attending to the link between sex, gender and sexuality, the Yes campaign narrowed the possibilities of the debate, preserving existing White heteronormative expectations of gender and sexuality. We contrast the debate that unfolded during the postal survey to the Australian Gay Liberation movement of the 1970s, the latter of which was able to successfully and radically challenge similarly homophobic campaigns. Rather than relying on 'palatable' or mainstream ideas of equality, love and fairness, Gay Liberation in Australia embraced the radical potential of LGBTIQ activism and presented a utopian, optimistic vision of a transformed future. Here we suggest that we can learn from the history of campaigns around sexuality, to understand what was 'won'? in the SSM debate, and to better develop strategies for change in the future.

Evaluation and Attitude towards Homosexuality in the Irish Context: A Corpus-assisted Discourse Analysis of APPRAISAL Patterns in 2008 Newspaper Articles  / Leanne Bartley ; Miguel-Angel Benitez-Castro.

Irish Journal of Applied Social Studies, 16 (2016) 1, p. 1-20
bron: Irish Journal of Applied Social Studies jaargang: 16 (2016) 1 , p. 1-20
samenvatting: Abstract : The analysis of newspaper discourse offers valuable insights into how society represents or misrepresents certain social participants and their actions. In view of the bias claimed to exist in journalistic prose, it is not uncommon to find evidence of the mistreatment directed towards particular minorities. In this paper, the ideological stance associated with a specific minority group (i.e. homosexuals) is brought to the forefront in 2008, when Ireland's vibrant economy took a dramatic turn for the worse. Incidentally, this coincided with homosexuality taking centre stage in Ireland's political agenda, as 2008 marked the final stage of the long drawn-out debate on the Civil Partnership Bill. This paper is designed to offer insights into how evaluative language may reflect the mentality of Irish society in relation to the LGBT community. Martin & White's (2005) APPRAISAL theory is highly relevant and applicable for this purpose, as it covers the idea of social esteem, social sanction, personal attitude and appreciation, which can be powerful indicators of a society's take on current affairs. The methodology employed here is that of corpus-assisted discourse analysis. The dataset comprises over 200,000 words taken from three different newspapers: Two tabloids and one broadsheet. Our dataset is annotated on the basis of the categories in Martin & White's (2005) subsystem of ATTITUDE (AFFECT, JUDGEMENT and APPRECIATION). The application of this taxonomy uncovers a remarkably negative stance towards the Irish LGBT community in the sample analysed. This is particularly evident in the predominance of evaluative and emotive language associated with the categories of negative JUDGEMENT and AFFECT. Previous research on the same sample, looking at metaphor, transitivity and modality, has cast light on how homosexuals are repeatedly discriminated against and vilified in the Irish public arena. This study confirms the results so far obtained through the analysis of evaluative language.

Changing Media and Changing Minds: Media Exposure and Viewer Attitudes Toward Homosexuality  / Gabby Gonta ... [et al.].

Pepperdine Journal of Communication Research, 5 (2017) 5, p. 22-34
bron: Pepperdine Journal of Communication Research jaargang: 5 (2017) 5 , p. 22-34
samenvatting: Abstract: This study aims to evaluate the relationships between media exposure, age, and attitude on homosexuality. Considering past research, we concluded that younger participants with higher levels of media would have more positive attitudes on homosexuality. A convenience non-probability sample of 198 participants (100 young adults, 49 middle-aged adults, and 49 older adults) participated in a cross-sectional, quantitative online survey. Our results show that (1) higher media exposure levels foster more accepting attitudes, (2) young participants are more accepting of homosexuality, and (3) news media participants have more accepting attitudes compared to entertainment media participants. Keywords: media exposure, homosexuality, age, attitudes, acceptability, willingness

samenvatting: By blocking fake videos, racist rants, self-loathing gay Republicans and other fake accounts with nothing positive to offer on social media, you can still be left with some valuable insights, not just stroking, according to Micheel Musto.
