samenvatting: There is currently a tremendous void in the gerontological research on the grandparent-grandchild relationship when grandparents are Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, or Transgender (LGBT). This article highlights the findings from a qualitative study that explored the perceptions, attitudes, and beliefs of lesbian and bisexual grandmothers. Sixteen self-identified lesbian or bisexual grandmothers from the Midwest participated in face-to-face interviews. Content analysis of the expressed perceptions revealed common themes and/or areas of importance Grandmothers' perceptions were organized under one broad theme: the centrality of sexual orientation on the grandmother-grandchild relationship. This theme consisted of categories and subcategories. The theme, categories, and subcategories are discussed and quotes from the interview transcripts are provided to illustrate the analytic patterns.
