In chapters by lesbians from Australia, Canada, the UK and the US, this remarkable degree of lesbian presence across the academy is subjected to a rigorous critique by the contributors to this volume who analyze issues such as the notion of specifically lesbian knowledge in various academic disciplines, the impact of lesbian feminism and of queer on the emergence of lesbians within higher education and the problematic of incorporating lesbian studies within the academy. From the downright pessimistic to the seriously celebratory, contributors interrogate the effects lesbians as activists, teachers and researchers have had, and continue to have, on changing disciplines and the academy.

samenvatting: Research and education on lesbian health has increased substantially in quantity and quality in the past 40 years, but little of this work has been produced by nursing scholars. We began our academic nursing careers as out lesbian faculty at the same college of nursing in the late 1980s, where we collaborated on the earliest studies of attitudes about lesbians in the nursing profession. Our paths diverged in the early 1990s, but we shared similar experiences in nursing education that highlight the structural and attitudinal barriers within nursing that have inhibited lesbian health studies. The deeply imbedded lesbian phobia within nursing has historic roots that plague contemporary research, education, and practice. In this article, we discuss the inclusion of lesbian health in nursing, share some of our personal stories about the obstacles we encountered, and end with suggestions for changing this stifling climate for future generations of lesbian health scholars. samenvatting: Queer theory often falls impotent in its palatability across disciplinary lines. I offer a conceptual article that interrogates the dis-ease and divide when considering queer theory in and for the health sciences. In so doing, I look to foster a process of making queer theory more tenable to applied practice - and to make practice in social work, at least, more queer. The exemplar of HIV is deconstructed as a preeminent discourse and health disparity. In the end, it is argued that queer theory may be an essential intervention in the arsenal of the helping professions. Geurts is hoogleraartranslationele neurowetenschap en was voorzitter van ZonW, dat gezondheidsonderzoek financieert. Op zaterdag 15 januari 2022 wordt hij geïnstalleerd als rector magnificus aan de Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam.
