HIV/AIDS and homophobia : subtle hatreds, severe consequences and the question of origins  / Gary W. Dowsett.

Culture, Health and Sexuality, 5 (2003) 2 (march/april), p. 121-136
bron: Culture, Health and Sexuality jaargang: 5 (2003) 2 (march/april), p. 121-136
samenvatting: This paper argues that the relationship between homophobia and HIV/AIDS is not as direct as is often assumed. This argument is pursued through an examination of the situation of gay men in Australia, a country where the HIV epidemic is largely confined to gay men, and Bangladesh, a country and culture where sex between men does not conform to categories of human sexuality privileged in Western theory. Both of these countries reveal something different about cultures of sex between men, which provides a counterpoint to the often compelling and usually pervasive accounts of HIV-related discrimination that are derived particularly from North America. The paper concludes with a plea that as efforts are geared up to fight the HIV pandemic in Asia and the Pacific, researchers, planners and practitioners become more critical of the conceptual tools they rely on in thinking about HIV/AIDS and human sexual activity, so that it is possible to mobilize (and do less damage to) local cultures of sexuality.

Men who have sex with men's sexual relations with women in Bangladesh  / Sharful Islam Khan ... [et al.].

Culture, Health and Sexuality, 7 (2005) 2 (march), p. 159-169
bron: Culture, Health and Sexuality jaargang: 7 (2005) 2 (march), p. 159-169
samenvatting: Studies of men who have sex with men in South Asian countries including Bangladesh have tended to focus mainly on measuring male-to-male sexual risk behaviours, with less attention being given to understanding the nature and meaning of their sexual relations with women. This can result in missed opportunities for HIV/AIDS-related intervention. This paper, based on a small scale qualitative study, attempts to develop a cultural model to understand men who have sex with men's sexual relations with women within a gender and masculinity framework. Findings reveal that in Bangladesh men who have sex with men frequently surrender to societal pressures to marry, become husbands and shoulder fatherhood. This forces some women to become the silent sufferers of some of the negative consequences of hetero-normative patriarchal practice. Importantly, however, men who have sex with men consider sex with women a form of real sex within a framework of masculine sexual potency irrespective of preference, desire or eroticism. Thus, challenges exist to undertaking sexual health promotion and HIV/AIDS prevention in culturally sensitive ways.

Fighting for sexual tolerance  / Roland Buerk.

BBC News 21-06-2005
bron: BBC News 21-06-2005
samenvatting: They have been ostracised for generations but now they are campaigning for equal treatment from society and the law. They are the hizras of Bangladesh. Hizra literally means "impotent ones". Many hizras in Bangladesh say they are born hermaphrodite, of indeterminate gender. Others are men who want a sex change, though few can afford to have the operation. All dress as women in saris or the long flowing blouses and trousers known as shalwar kameez. They wear jewellery and make-up.
