"Gay? Prove it" : The politics of queer anti-deportation activism  / Rachel A Lewis.

Sexualities, 17 (2014) 8 (dec), p. 958-975
bron: Sexualities jaargang: 17 (2014) 8 (dec), p. 958-975
samenvatting: This article examines how gender, sexuality, race and class intersect in queer asylum claims to influence the perceived credibility of gay and lesbian asylum applicants. Building on recent scholarship in queer migration studies that considers the role of gender and sexuality in the social construction of migrant illegality, this article explores how practices of credibility assessment in the political asylum process produce women and sexual minorities as deportable subjects. As I argue, the tactics utilized by gay male asylum applicants to resist deportation show how practices of credibility assessment in the political asylum process are linked to the state's reproduction of sexual citizenship narratives, narratives that have a disproportionately negative impact upon queer female migrants of color. Accounting for the intersections among gender, sexuality, race and class in influencing the perceived credibility of gay and lesbian asylum applicants is thus crucial for conceptualizing alternative forms of queer anti-deportation activism.

Documenting the undocumented : Toward a queer politics of no borders  / Melissa Autumn White.

Sexualities, 17 (2014) 8 (dec), p. 976-997
bron: Sexualities jaargang: 17 (2014) 8 (dec), p. 976-997
samenvatting: This article explores the challenges of developing queer migrant justice strategies within nation-state contexts. With a focus on the Toronto-based 'Let Alvaro Stay' campaign (2011) and Julio Salgado's collaborative 'I Am Undocuqueer' project, I critically examine queer anti-deportation activists' reliance on methodological nationalisms and visibility politics in making claims hearable to the state. While such tactics risk reinforcing the nation-state as a primary site of identification, thereby contributing to its naturalization as an inevitable horizon of belonging, I argue that they also open space for imagining queer(er) no borders futures.

"Falling in love with me means that she can never go back" : a case study exploring the cumulative costs of multiple migrations  / Anusha Kassan ...[et al.].

Journal of Lesbian Studies, 27 (2023) 1 (jan-mar), p. 107-126
bron: Journal of Lesbian Studies jaargang: 27 (2023) 1 (jan-mar), p. 107-126
samenvatting: This case study centers on the narrative accounts of a lesbian couple in a binational relationship (i.e., two women from different countries) who left the United States (U.S.) at a time when immigration laws did not recognize their union. Given that they could not legally stay in the U.S. together, they immigrated to the Netherlands and subsequently to Canada. When DOMA was overturned and the couple was eligible to apply for immigration to the U.S., they opted to remain in Canada, in part due to the strain of multiple migrations. This concept has been described as the complex process that accompanies more than one immigration experience and the cumulative effect that this can have on couples and families over time, particularly when multiple resettlements have taken place. A descriptive case study methodology was employed to investigate the perceptions of multiple migrations of this lesbian binational couple, focusing mainly on their experiences in Canada. Specifically, individual interviews were conducted with each woman to explore their lived experiences of multiple migration and the impact this has had on various aspects of their lives, including those occurring at the intersection of privilege and oppression. A description of each woman is presented, followed by the significant themes that emerged from this study, including immigration difficulties and the centrality of relationship. Implications for psychological training, practice, research, policy were presented.
